I'm hoping to come to Saltholme next March with my RSPB Local Group. It will be my first visit their and as I live by myself without any transport, I thought this a good way to go Birdwatching and it will be my first outing with the Local Group, although I joined the Group in April of this year. I'm just getting used to be in the Group for my first few months. They arn't taking any bookings for the Bus yet, but I'm very keen to make this my first trip with them. I've already been to 2 indoor meetings this year, as they are held every 3 months. What can I expect to see at Saltholme in March and what are the facility's like at Saltholme?
Regards,
Ian.
Hi Thomo!
I don't work at Saltholme and have never visited (great start eh!) but this section of the Saltholme site may help in terms of facilities - www.rspb.org.uk/.../facilities.aspx
In terms of what you will see in March, well treat it very similar to any other wetland reserve you may have been to: Gulls, Terns, Grebes, Lapwing. They also have drumming Snipe and Hares!
It might be worth checking the sightings that were seen this year in March to get an idea of what you might expect next year! - www.rspb.org.uk/.../03.aspx
In reply to Ben A:
I am new to birding and know very little about the types as yet.
I am local to saltholme though and I think I have been about 5 times since august.
Saltholme has a number of hides at the reserve. All hides have a board inside where the days spotted birds are listed, and each hide has enough room for groups of people.
There are Rspb volunteers all around and can usually be found i the hides to answer any questions you have and will always point out where the different birds are.
The facility itself has an onsite classroom for schools to use, there is a good size cafe upstairs which i can vouch does serve a very nice meal. The site shop sells bird food and feeders and also has a large range of scopes and binoculars, there is more in the shop but I haven't looked that hard.
Saltholme also has a small number of mobility scooters that are free to use but I would encourage you or your group to phone in advance at busy times as its first come basis and they will hold one if required.
I cannot think of anything else to add right now,but would say Yes come to saltholme its very friendly and teaming with wildlife

I won't need a scooter and neither will any of the other members of the Local Group. I've just bought my first Scope and it arrived yesterday and it is supperb. I'm really looking forward to coming to Saltholme in March of next year and thanks for the information.
In reply to THOMO:
hi! sorry for the late response, if you're looking to come with a local group, i would encourage you to let us know if you want anything like a takl about the site or a guided walk. We love welcoming new groups to the site!
In reply to Lydia T:
All I can say is you are assured of a friendly informative welcome anytime, and Paul is right the café is a treat at reasonable prices too
