During much of October and November, Adam and the volunteers were out on the wet grassland fixing all the leaky sluices.  And then it rained.....................a lot.

This aerial photo was taken after some of the recent rain.   The network of shallow feeder channels can be seen clearly.  These channels help move the water to all areas of the grassland, and also provide feeding areas for lapwing chicks in the spring and summer, in the form of midges and other squishy animals.  Paddy's Pool and Island can be seen on the right of the photo, while in the distance, you can make out Haverton Hole and the Allotment Pool.

And here's a closer view................

Naturally it's good for wildfowl and 14 Whooper Swans were sitting in it yesterday.  It has rained much more since these photos were taken, and there is more rain to come tomorrow.  It will be interesting to see what it looks like at the beginning of the breeding season.  It should be just right for breeding waders with plenty of nosh for the chicks.
