I promise that I'm not counting my tree sparrows before they hatch, but this photo from Chris Furphy has got the Saltholme gang very excited.

Yes.  It's a tree sparrow popping its head out of a nestbox at Saltholme.

You'll most likely remember that we've been getting very excited over a small group of tree sparrows that have been on the reserve since early October.  We're hoping that they'll stay with us over the winter and eventually establish themselves as a little breeding colony.

Tree sparrows aren't as common as they once were and we think that it's mainly due to changes in farming.  Don't get too glum, the good news is that it looks like they're making a comeback.
