Hi,

Or, here come the sunflowers ... and July ...

In May we asked visitors to step up for nature and help us plant sunflowers in Saltholme's wildlife garden, and the result? Come and see - the flowers are suddenly opening, big and bold.

As long as the flowers are not double - just a single row of petals - the bees and hoverflies will love them.  Bees also like pollen so we chose not to use a pollen-free variety.  Where to get good seed?  Simple - our shop sells lots as bird food and the photo shows a flower grown from this seed, but we also have red ones grown from a packet of seed.  And, early in the autumn when these flowers have their own seed the greenfinches will come for a feast.

Cheers

Peter.
