We have the Jubilee celebrations this weekend with the half-term week following, so I'd like to take the opportunity to tell families what activities and events we have prepared here at Saltholme!

The discovery zone is bursting into life thanks to the glorious weather we have all been enjoying. I was lucky enough to be the wild guide on duty during last weekend, and what a difference the sun made!

The dragonfly above is called a four-spot chaser, and was particularly special for me to see as it was the first dragonfly I had seen this year. Happily, an hour later I saw another! One lucky family who were pond-dipping at the time also managed to see the dragonfly. The best thing about the dragonflies and damselflies that are flying about at the moment is you don't have to try too hard to see them - more often than not they will zoom right past you - their wings shimmering in the sun.

On Sunday, we were more than a little shocked to see what one family had managed to net whilst pond-dipping - a great diving beetle! At almost two inches long and an inch wide, you definitely know when you have caught one of these beasties.  The day before, on Saturday, a family managed to catch two water scorpions, an aquatic bug I had never seen before, so come on down and see what you can find.

Saltholme will play host to some very exciting crafty activities during Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the half-term week.  Join us from 11am until 12 noon and then from 1 pm - 3 pm in the classroom to create amazing cockleshell jewellery and sculptures using shells and clay.  Find out more about the important role the cockle shells have at Saltholme here.

Finally, don't forget to keep an eye on our events page - we have lots of exciting activities planned for this summer, and the June half-term week is just the beginning!

Thanks,

Stephen
