Hi,

Weather permitting, we try and do a butterfly survey every week here at Saltholme. Today’s sunny weather provided a perfect opportunity to head out for this week’s survey. In total we saw five butterflies of three species, Meadow Brown, Small Heath and Small Tortoiseshell. Our estate team volunteers were a lot luckier though, whilst continuing their hard work pulling Ragwort they managed to see several Meadow Browns, Small Heath and even a Common Blue butterfly!

The fantastic sharp images above show a male Common Blue (top photograph) and a female Common Blue (bottom photograph). They were taken by Mike Small last year.

This blog provides a perfect opportunity to tell you about the Big Butterfly Count, a survey organised by Butterfly Conservation which will run from the 14th July-5th August.  The survey only requires 15 minutes of your time and could be done in your garden or perhaps as you wander around Saltholme. The best part about butterfly surveys is that they ideally should be done during sunny weather and not forgetting that the information you collect could play an important role in the conservation of British butterflies. Cheers,

Adam
