When I started work here at Saltholme, I was very much an amateur amongst experts. In many ways I still am, but as the months have progressed so has my knowledge and passion for the wild world of the reserve. Five months ago I wouldn’t have been able to identify a common tern or tell a goldfinch from any other finch! I’ve always said this position would be a learning experience for me, and that it has. Education is very important here at Saltholme, and as much as you may know about nature, even local nature, there is always plenty more to discover.

We pride ourselves on welcoming everyone to Saltholme, from complete beginners to the most avid birder, and young people are a valuable and enriching part of the Saltholme community. Our dedicated educational team are constantly hosting events, running craft workshops, taking young people out on tours, or engaging with youth around the reserve as they take in the magnificent scenery. If the goal of the RSPB is to protect nature, then it is imperative that we instil in our young community the importance of the natural world.

That’s why we run an under 5s club every Monday, where parents can bring their little ones to draw, play and learn in a safe and fun environment. It’s why we have pond dipping regularly on the reserve, so young people can discover the variety of life that exists just below the surface of the water. It’s why we run events like ‘Be Nice to Nettles Week’ this week, and provide half term activities centred around birds and insects and other garden wildlife. This half term, we’ll be engaging young people with lessons and crafts focussed on beautiful dragonflies!

There is always something to learn, and there is always an opportunity to learn it here at Saltholme. For information about upcoming events you can always give us a call and see what’s going on, or simply come along to the reserve and see what you discover.

I’ve worked here a few short months, and in that time my knowledge of the natural world has increased ten fold! Just think what Saltholme can teach you, and what fresh ideas you may bring to Saltholme!

Enjoy,

Andrew.
