Adrienne, who's one of Saltholme's hide guides, shared this great story with me earlier in the week ...
We were sitting in the cafe on afternoon. I am not sure if it was late November or December, but it was just after the work had been done to remove the reeds in from of the sand martin bank.
A young fox came round the corner from the feeding station carrying what looked like a fat ball in its mouth. It walked across to the muddy cart tracks in front of the sand martin bank and dug a small hole, using its front paws. It dropped the fat ball in to the hole and then covered it up with mud, using its snout. It then walked back towards the feeders, very nonchalantly, looking up at all the people in the cafe who were watching it.
I never knew foxes cached food, so it was amazing to see this.
