Kingfisher hide

Hi all

I wonder if someone can answer a question please about the kingfisher hide.

As I am recovering from a heart attack but am recovering well I would prefer to use the lower part of the hide so I dont have to carry my kit upstairs.

I went last year and I had a look in the lower hide but could not see much because the reeds were so tall.

I appreciate I did not discover Rye meads until about june/july so is it possible if I go in may the reeds will be much lower.

Kind regards for anyone who can help.

Drew

  • Dear Drew,

Thank you for your query! I hope I can sort it out for you so you can visit again and have a great time!

Can I ask - which reeds are you refering too? Was it the vegetation in front of the window getting in the way? We try and cut the vegetation regularly from the window so there is a great view of the water, bank and all the posts, but we have to be careful not to disturb the nesting kingfishers.

When they are feeding young they regularly sit on the posts in the water so you should be able to see them.

I hope you'll come back and visit soon!

  • Hi Louise

Many thanks for your prompt reply, yes of course when I think back to last year the problem would have been the vegetation and not reeds.

I really enjoyed my time at Rye Meads last year and I am lucky that a local chap to me here in peterborough is a native of Hertfordshire and knows Rye Meads and the area so will take me again this year.

He even joined the RSPB at our first visit so he has visited many reserves now and is a keen photographer too.

I feel more able to photograph from below the main hide and always try to go in the week so its quiet and I can relax.

If you are at the reserve when I visit I will hope to say thanks to you in person for your kind words and the lovely staff who were so helpful to me last year.

    With regards

    Drew

Thank you for your kind words about all the staff and volunteers - we are very lucky, our volunteers are complete stars! Did you know we have two full time members of staff and a few part time staff, but then in comparison nearly 100 volunteers! Says who does the work really!
