This week (14th - 21st Feb) the RSPB are celebrating National Nestbox Week in association with the BTO http://www.bto.org/about-birds/nnbw.
We have just put up a new nest box in the picnic area as you enter the reserve and we would like to encourage all of you to do the same! Think about placing one in your garden, on your house, at your place of work or anywhere you can think of that might help give nature a home. If you've been thinking about doing so for a while, now is the perfect time as birds are beginning to think about breeding for spring, and with all the stormy weather they may have lost possible holes in trees or old buildings. In return you may attract new species and families, and be able to enjoy watching them as they nest and breed!
This year fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood have got involved in championing environmental issues and have decorated a unique selection of nest boxes with original designs to be auctioned off for us! See them here: http://www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/nestboxauction.aspx.
This weekend at our young wildlife explorer's club we decided to get into the spirit by decorating mini bird tables with tiles and bright colours! If you know someone aged between 6 - 12 years old who would like to join in with future activities, please give us a shout on 01992 708383. The club meet on the third Saturday of every month and take part in a wide range of fun and educational activities- just £3 a time for junior members. We are always on the look out for young conservationists and nature enthusiasts who'd like to join us!
