Rain, wind and more rain was the main theme this weekend. Outside the Lapwing hide the meadow is so flooded that it has become a fourth lagoon for us! About 500 black-headed gulls were creating a spectacle flying around out there on Saturday, and on Sunday a drake pintail was showing well out there, moving on later to the Gadwall hide. Luckily we managed to avoid being completely underwater on our side of the reserve, and the paths were fairly clear. However unless you've got your swimming gear we're not recommending anyone going through to the HMWT part at the moment!
Other highlights of the weekend included a female peregrine chasing crows all over the place, and scaring moorhen out on the lagoon! 4 shelduck, 2 bullfinches at the gadwall hide, cetti's singing, a muntjac and a small group of redwing by the turnstile.
Finally we had some sun on Sunday afternoon and our roving reserve guides reported a feeling of spring in the air with great tits and dunnock singing, a pair of stock doves displaying to each other, black-headed gulls showing darkening heads, snowdrops and hawthorn coming into leaf. Let's hope they're not too premature!
Have a good week everyone!
