Hello,

You've probably seen the couple of blogs about the works going on over on Wennington - creating a series of new shallow scrapes and drains across the marsh that would considerably enhance the marsh for wildlife...

(If not, find out more about the project have a look here, and the latest news of the works going with a bang look here)

So since Wednesday things have been going with a bang...

We had to call the Police and Bomb Squad twice on Wednesday, and once on Thursday due to unknown items being uncovered -  due to the military history on site we have to be quite careful, they turned out to be unexploded ordinance!

The Bomb Squad completed a controlled explosion twice (once on Wednesday and once on Thursday) for strange stone looking items:

The bomb squad identified them (they were both the same) as 18 pound practice air craft bomb (so it would've been dropped from am aircraft)!

They made a good old bang when they were detonated!

After the second one was dealt with, the diggers got going again, digging up sections of mud... Until they started digging up a load of chalk!
Now this we didn't expect, so they started to uncover what ever it was to work out what was going on!

Eventually this appeared:

A big chalk circle with a cross through it!

It all started to make sense.

It's an aircraft practice target! Explaining why we kept finding object around it!

So years ago, when the MOD maintained this as a training camp for soldiers (through World War One and Two) this was a target that soldiers practiced dropping bombs from aircraft.

The Bomb Squad sent us a picture of what the 18 pound practice air craft bomb would've looked like:

What it would've looked like and what it looked like when we found it!

The strange stone looking objects would've been the top section (with the explosives).

Well that's something a little bit different!
