Had an absolutely fabulous day out at RSPB Dungeness yesterday. In 25 years of visiting Dunge (as us birders affectionately call the area) I have never seen in the snow. An even more alien but very beautiful landscape and the birding was somewhat rewarding...

We saw a huge Glaucous Gull on the beach, Gannets plunging so close you could hear them calling, 1000's of auks and many divers and Kittiwakes on the sea.

Glaucous Gull with bubble gum pink legs!

Around the reserve trails we encountered two bright little Firecrests, 6 Chiffchaffs, 20 Tree Sparrows (some are now colour ringed), 8 Smew, 6 Bewick's Swans, 20 White-fronted Geese, a Great White Egret, an amazing 7 Bitterns, 3 Woodcock, 70 Snipe, squealing Water Rails, Bearded Tits, 12 Marsh Harriers, male Merlin and Peregrine. Not too shabby by any means.... and if you have a spare day during the winter I would heartliy recommend a visit to this unique Kentish landscape...

Great White Egret

Thirsty Tree Sparrow... do not forget to put water out!

and thank you Mary, Chris and Jill for making me a crew so welcome.
