Our Wasp Spiders are normally long over by late September so to still have a couple of females guarding their precious egg sack cocoons on the 20th October is extraordinary. Needless to say it has been the diligent efforts of Clive 'Waspy' Watts that we still know where these late ones are.  It has certainly been the best year on record here for the species

On top of this there are still butterflies on the wing including Peacock, Red Admiral, Comma and Speckled Wood as well as good numbers of Common Darter and Migrant Hawker dragonflies.

Crickets are still stridulating on calm warm days and can often be seen sitting on the boardwalks absorbing the free heat!

There are still a few flies around, mostly Flesh Flies and Bluebottles but there are some nice Stable Flies eyeing me up as I type this!

Even the Slider terrapin on his Northern Trail Pool is still active and he seems a little bigger that he was last summer!
