You may have noticed that the huge Neolithic bog stump has disappeared from in front of the Purfleet Hide. This ancient piece of timber was unearthed when we were constructing the new scrape and has proudly stood there for well over a year now.

As many of you may have noticed, it has been used as a perch by various species during that time including Redshanks, Cormorants and Starlings.... However it is the more predatory species that have given us cause for concern.

We are aware that Crows, Magpies and the Kestrel all perch on the hide roof and fence posts to look for a meal but the bog wood is even taller and is perfectly situated in the heart of our main Lapwing and Redshank breeding area and is ideal for spying out nests and chicks.

As such we took the decision to utilise Pearls (our landscaping contractors) to move it and I hope to have it brought to near the centre where we can all enjoy it at closer quarters.

Oh and great and timely shot by Lawrence Rogers.
