Hello everyone,

Graham Howie, one of our lovely Learning Assistants, has written something about his day with Scargill School...

Over to Graham:

Hi everyone, I'm Graham - one of the Learning Assistants here at Rainham Marshes. When schools bring their classes to the reserve I am part of the team that leads the curriculum linked education courses. Bringing your class to a reserve is great, the kids love it and so do we! Being out of the classroom is really great for the children, it allows them to learn in different ways with practical hands on activities - and it's great fun!

We had a lovely group of children visiting us the other day from Scargill Infant School came and I wanted to tell you about it! The Year 1 class - Class 5 - from Scargill Infant School came to Rainham on Tuesday the 3rd of May to  study Plants and Minibeasts.

They learned:

 - how to identify and name some common wild plants

- how to look at plant structures and be able to name some of them

- identify and name common animals (including carnivores, herbivores and omnivores)

The children had a great time engaging with nature in a pond dipping session and a nature walk, looking at plants. They also had the opportunity to make natural art depictions of plants and their structure - have a look at their fabulous creations:

They also found a crazy looking larva of a pond creature that we worked out is a aquatic horse fly larva!

If you are a teacher you can bring your class here to Rainham Marshes...

You can choose from a selection of half or full-day programmes that will get your group exploring the natural world with exciting hands-on activities.

Led by our professional learning staff, programmes are linked to curriculum topics and are carefully crafted so that your class gets the most out of their time in our outdoor classroom.
