I wanted to start a few blogs about getting active this Autumn and telling you what we are doing here at Rainham, but also what you can do in the local area. Earlier this month I talked about cycling (see here)...

Cycling is a great way to get about and get active - as well as saving you money, getting you fit and is better for the environment than driving your automobile.

We are working with ForwardMotion to encourage people to visit the reserve by bicycle and explore the River Wall cycle route part of the reserve.

ForwardMotion is a new initiative to reduce reliance on cars and get people to consider alternative travel options such as cycling, catching public transport or walking. It is funded by the Department for Transport’s Access Fund.

Some of the amazing things they offer include a bicycle loan scheme, personal travel plans, bus buddies, and the cycle hub can help you fix your bike, or buy a new one.

They even offer free bespoke cycle training
If you want to learn how to build your confidence to ride in today’s traffic we can offer free, one to one cycle training with a qualified instructor, tailor-made for your individual needs.

Whether you’ve never been on a bike before or just want to boost your confidence, Bespoke cycle training can help you achieve your cycling goals. They can provide guidance on the best route to take to work or study and can set you up a cycle buddy on your first few journeys to help you get confident.

Their sessions cover:

  • Learn to ride from scratch, or build your confidence if you haven’t ridden for a while
  • Learn how to ride safely on busy roads, or at junctions/roundabouts
  • Learn to ride safely as a family
  • Find the best route to your place of work, and practice it with ForwardMotion
  • Find out how to maintain your bike and keep it safe
  • All sessions are FREE! Even the one-to-one sessions!

Using public transport is another great way to get around - did you know that our local railway line c2c is 'going green' and offering a 50% discount for their 'Go Green Week' so there are offering the discount to encourage people to go green and ditch the car!

To encourage you to ditch the car and take the train they're offering a 50% discount code if you sign up to go green by 29 September. You’ll be able to use this discount code to get 50% off when you buy an adult Off-Peak return train ticket online, for travel between 01 October – 03 November. *Terms apply - for more details and to sign up look here...
