For anyone who has visited us at Pulborough Brooks in April or May, I’m sure you were wowed by the virtuoso performance of the nightingale.
We are very proud of our nightingales – not only do they sound wonderful but they are exhibitionists too! (Thanks to Mick Davis and Dave Andrews for these photos of this year's show-offs!)
This year we had 9 or 10 singing males, a memorable nightingale festival and good breeding success.
Most of our nightingales will be on their way back to sub-Saharan Africa as I write, so whilst you’re unlikely to see or hear them again this year, there is something you can do now to help ensure that nightingales can be seen and heard next year and for many years to come...
Whilst we are giving 9 or 10 pairs of nightingales a home at Pulborough Brooks, Chattenden Wood and Lodge Hill in Kent are home to 85 pairs – just imagine how incredible a night-time concert is there!
Despite it’s designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) the local council has approved a development plan that will damage this special habitat and threaten this vital nightingale stronghold.
We’re asking for a public enquiry to challenge this decision and we need your help. Find out more about this case at http://www.rspb.org.uk/whatwedo/campaigningfornature/casework/details.aspx?id=tcm:9-317476 and sign our e-petition.
Thank you
