Aileen Meek writes... Whatever you thought of the summer that’s past, the season of winter wildness awaits and who knows what it will bring? Gentle winds or great gusts and gales, frost-crusted mornings or falls of snow that put a stop to all plans but create new ones like sledging and snowballs and then swadging by the fire! But don’t spend all winter by the fireside - whatever it looks like, get your cosiest clothes on and take your camera with you because that fantastic photo chance always seems to come along when you’ve left your camera behind! And if you’ve got your camera, and you get that dream shot, you can send it in to “Wild Orkney: The Way I See It” the year-long photographic competition run by RSPB Orkney Local Group and Orkney Camera Club. All ages can join in! You do not have to belong to the RSPB or to the Camera Club in order to enter.Find out all about the competition here: http://www.orkneycommunities.co.uk/orkneycameraclub/ And, maybe you don’t know that we are really keen to get Orkney schools involved... Wild Orkney: The Way We See It
We are encouraging individual classes or school groups or the whole school to create a montage of photographs taken by members of your class or school. If you create a montage, your images should fit into the same categories as the four in the competition rules. The schools’ montage prints will not be judged and there will be no prizes - but they will be displayed, so make sure that your school name and class are clearly marked on the back of the print. Send your printed montage to: Schools Montage, RSPB Scotland, 12-14 North End Road, Stromness, Orkney, KW16 3AG. If you are planning to create and send in a montage, I would love to know as then we will know how many we will have to display, so drop me an email if you can. If you would like to have a PowerPoint presentation explaining the Photographic Competition and Schools’ Montage sent to you to show to your class, or if you have any questions, please contact me, Aileen Meek: aileen.meek@rspb.org.uk. If you would like help with any aspect of wildlife and habitats in Orkney, contact RSPB Orkney Field Teacher Lindsey Taylor: lindsey.taylor@rspb.org.uk.We are already really excited about all of the images of Orkney that will come our way by the end of March 2013!
