The Choin at our Marwick Reserve has been playing host to quite a few white-winged gulls in the last few weeks BUT in the last few days numbers are going off the scale ... Today alone at Marwick I had 4 Iceland Gulls and 3 Glaucous Gulls, nearby another Iceland Gull - wow 8 birds in total a fine sight by any standards. I then went down to the Bay of Skaill (5km south of Marwick) and over a 30 minute period had 3 more Glaucous Gulls and 27 Iceland Gulls - These numbers are BONKERS! I estimate with my counts and what other birdwatchers have recorded today that we have a minimum of 50 birds present (15 Glaucous and 37 Iceland Gulls - incredible).

The current invasion seems to be occuring all down the west coast of the UK. Indeed to the north-west on the Faeroe Islands they have also had record numbers also! At the moment I am not really sure what is driving these birds to our shores but they are very welcome visitors - I just hope they hang around when we have some calmer, drier weather as the watching conditions today were difficult to say the least!
