The foggy, damp weather over the last few days hasn’t been great for birdwatching, but Hoy’s insects haven’t been put off; during a walk along the road to Rackwick on Friday 5th August, not just one but three Golden-ringed Dragonflies were sighted from the path. These fabulous dragonflies are impressive even if insects aren’t your thing: large, and beautifully marked with black and golden rings. In Orkney, they breed only on Hoy, and August is one of the best months in which to look for them. They live by acidic streams and will fly just above flowing water, but can also be seen settled on vegetation away from water.
Other dragonflies to be found on Hoy at this time of year include the Four-spotted Chaser, Common Hawker and Black Darter, whilst damselflies – smaller and more delicate in appearance – include the Large Red, Common Blue and Blue-tailed Damselfly. They can be shy and will move off when disturbed, so a quiet approach will allow a better view.

Hi Lucinda - as always seems to happen when you see something interesting, the camera was at home! I'm hoping to be able to post a photo soon, and you can find some good images on the British Dragonfly Society website.
