  • Greenland White-fronted Geese at The Loons RSPB reserve, Birsay

Greenland White-fronted Geese are a localised winter visitor to Scotland. Orkney has only one site where it is still possible to encounter this distinctive goose. A medium-sized grey goose with orange legs and an orange bill; adults have a large white blaize surrounding the base of the bill and bold black bars on the belly. Juveniles lack this black barring and generally show less white surround at the bill base.

  • An Otterly Brilliant Week by Christine Hall (Onziebust & Trumland RSPB Warden)

Sun 10th Dec: Brig O’Waithe, Stennesss

Heading north out of Stromness to have a text come through saying there was 5 otters at the Brig O’Waithe. That’s right five! Called for a quick turn around. As we pulled up a quick scan revealed that they were on the island (downstream side of the bridge) What we took to be a dog otter and presumably a mother and 3 fairly big cubs. Corncrakes are very secretive and when they arrive back from Africa they need areas of early cover to hide in. Plant species such as nettles, iris and cow parsley are ideal as they grow in early spring. At Onziebust we create corncrake corridors and manage hay meadows with the aim of providing suitable…
