Happy new week folks!  Don't foget to check the last few posts of the previous week. Heron posted a photo of a female reed bunting,  AQ saw a "ginormous flock of corellas" (must Google that!),  OG has found a nice B&B for her trip, Alan posted a nifty shot of the changing of the guard at the eagle nest, folks are wondering how Diane is doing with the storm the big storm back  East, and much, much more!  :-)  We had almost 2 inches of rain in Santa Barbara today, which is brilliant.  Still sorting files and likely to be doing so for a day or three to come.  Take care all.

  • Good afternoon from Fife the weather here is sunny but chilly and it made me go out for a walk for my paper this morning instead of taking the car also saving the planet.  Loved the picture of a very happy dog waiting on the stick being thrown back into the water.  Bought a new bird table and followed the instructions and used all the screws supplied. Surely the racoon dog fur if it isbeing used and marketed as faux fur the company can be prosecuted under the trade discription act but how can it be proved if you are not an expert. I hate any animal being used in the way that D/I described although there was a programme on the tele about the bear in Russia and some hunters were skinning the bears without them being dead. On a happier note it must have been very satisfying swimming with dolphins as they always look as if they are smileing. Hope the people in eastern USA keep warm in the snow and those in Australia get some cooler weather and everyone else manages to keep well

  • I feel a bit happier about the WV eagle now. I have just seen dinner being delivered.

Me too Brenda.  Several of eagle cams in the US have snow on them including the one at Blackwater.  I find it quite hard to watch but they are steadfast in the job they have to do and as long as the male can bring food for her I guess they will make it but I don't know about the eggs.  Have read somewhere that they are brooding the eggs more than ususal just to keep them warm so fingers crossed.  Hope our ospreays don't turn up too soon and catch some bad weather.

  • Thanks for the top Brenda H but I am glad it gave you a laugh.  I am sure our American friends would be happier if they had got what we are getting.  Feeling a bit groggy and must admit have not done much except to look at the many cams I have been watching.  Hope you don't get a lot of snow, personally I can't wait for it to get warmer.  just not good in the cold weather.

  • Margobird : The picture on the Estonian webcam used to be a split screen with 2 cams. It is much better for now with just the one.

Isnt it exciting to see the photo of Rothiemurchus taken in Senegal on the Roy Dennis blog. Thanks for spotting that one Flying C.

  • Morning all.  Hoping Caerann isn't too shook up this morning since they had a small (4.5) earthquake just north of Chicago!  Who needs that on top of snow and ice!   Snowdrops must be a welcome sight and yes, Alan, the change of seasons is inexorable - thank heavens.

OG: Good question about the weeds but yes, the ground does dry out quickly.  They have bubble sprinklers at the rose garden but after the rains have gone completely, the soil can get very, very hard in parts and it's even harder to get the weeds out then.  Hope the car is perfect.  And of course, doesn't everyone need a mandolin and amplifers!

Brenda: Must correct my earlier post re whales: They can travel in groups of two or more, but can also travel solo.  Thanks for  posting the update about dinner on the eagle cam - hope it wasn't a frozen dinner.

Margobird:  Oh dear, a cold. What was it they used to say? "What price beauty?"  No chance of a car ride to the hairdresser?

Tiger: Thanks for photo, but had a hard time seeing the eagle in all that. I'm sure they aren't used to this much snow; hope they'll be okay.

Lindybird: At least happy dog knows what to do with sticks, if not balls. Oro, daughter's dog, is also happy dog, but clueless about what to do with either.  I will be seeing daughter Friday morning and am sure Oro will be expecting a long walk with me. Maybe I'll fit in a car ride for him this week too.

George: Hope the birds are happy with their new dining table. But horrors about things being skinned alive; maybe they should try that with the hunters. What kind of people are these?!?

Off to get organized. We are taking the older Camry we're thinking of buying to our mechanic to see if it has any potential problems we'd want to avoid; then maybe some other errands with OH.  Hate to say, but brilliant sunshine here again. I'll think warm thoughts for East Coast/UK folks, and cool ones for AQ and Wattle (wherever she is!).

  • Hi everyone.

Had a chuckle when i say your post Margobird and your reply Brenda:)) I knew what you meant. The snow has been on and off this morning but just in the last 10 minutes it looks a bit more intense. We are due to have the worst this afternoon/evening so we are just beginning (10.30am)

Margobird, sorry you have a bad cold. Hope it doesn't pull you down too much. Yes, I saw the pictures from Washington. That was a huge snowfall for them and they don't have as much equipment as other places. The other thing is what to do with the snow you are plowing! Out here in the sticks it's just pushed off the road but if you're in a city you need to scoop it up and cart it away. So a much bigger operation.

Sorry the weather is cold and snowy over there in the UK. Hope you don't get too much.

Diane, lets hope yours is pretty much over and there is a respite for you.

Lindybird, thanks for another lovely picture. Great to see such a happy dog and to know he is in such good shape. Full credit to you and Himself.

George, well done on the bird table and use all the screws. Always seems I have stuff left over when I've put something together.

Tiger, thanks for that screenshot. Incredible what these birds go through for their young.

OG, hope the new car is great and you enjoy it. Very exciting. Your son isn't wasting time moving his stuff!

Thanks Alan of course it was a split screen, the cold must be affecting my brains I think.  A much better view anyway.

Was exciting to see photo of Rothiemurchus and maybe someone will spot one of ours.

  • I have done it again Brenda H "top" instead of "tip".  Think I had better go and have a lie down as this cold is getting worse as the day goes on and obviously affecting my fingers as well.

  • Good Morning/Day from snowy, shakey Chicago! Received 12-ish or 14 inches of snow, it's hard to tell from inside but there's lots and lots of it. Not looking forward to cleaning off the cars and shoveling a path for  them out on the street, as I'm sure a lot of you folks can understand.

Had a 3.8 earthquake around 4 a.m. with the epicenter being some 50-ish miles away. I slept through it but John woke and said the whole building was rattling and all of our things too. Everyone is safe so that's the most important thing.

Here's a view of my next door neighbor's deck this morning:

I hope Diane and Gary fare well in this weather and that everyone else in our group stays safe and well. I'm off for now at just after 10 a.m. local time.
