Hi everyone. Happy Sunday! As usual, check out the last few entries of the previous week's chat to find out who left a plant at the supermarket checkout counter and ate a bag of chocolate donuts for lunch.
Brought Oro for home visit today; was lovely and sunny and daughter sat in the garden feeding him treats. He had a little snooze and then while my daughter took a nap Oro and I went to the beach and walked along the grassy area behind the sand for about a mile or so. (No trash cans to crash into!) Marvellous afternoon with brisk breeze and big surf, but now they're forecasting more rain for Monday through Wednesday!
Morning All. Dry here, & almost pleasant outside, but still rather cold. Doing horrible boring household stuff & catching up on bill paying etc. this am.
Alan: Have signed the Malta petition; thought I would be clever & tried to sign it twice, using Husbands name, but it won't accept two signatures from one email address. Perhaps some of you have a work email you could use to sign on behalf of a relative??
auntie: Loved the pic of the Eagle in Helsinki, how amazing is that?
Heron/Paul: Thanks for the graphic description of the weather there, hope it was a 'good, clean fight!' Come to think of it, we often seem to have a similar altercation here, where it can't make its mind up to begin with.
Diane: We ought to have known that you were playing plumber there, with the sink! How self sufficient. Have to agree that the hardest part must have been going out into the dark in search of a tool, where there might have been Wild Things waiting to pounce! My father would have said to you "You deserve a wooden medal for that!"
AQ: Enjoyed the history lesson. More please.
Yesterday, went with Friend to see "Nine" at the local cinema. Very good, very dramatic & glamorous (its about a Film Director in Italy, in the 60's) Lots of dare I say sexy dancing, punchy music & beautiful ladies, but of all the famous faces, we decided the best performance was from our very own Dame Judi Dench, what a star!
Of I go to do boring stuff, Take Care All, & have a good day.
Good Morning Hilary H and yes the baby rhino is just gorgeous. On my list of things to look at every day, she is piling on the weight now as well and growing fast. Small world you having been in the Army as well. I was fortunate to get a posting to Malta and also did 6 months in Ireland. As I have said previously it was a bit of a shock when after 2 years I was medically discharge due to the eye problems. Had a wonderful time while it lasted though. Have a good day.

Glad you still have your pied wagtail original goldfinch. The pair that visit my garden are regular visitors plus one that comes on its own but gets chased off when they are both there. We had some rain overnight so they have been busy picking up bits and pieces from around the feeders. I use dried worms at the moment (fresh ones when the babies arrive) and they seem to like them a lot.
Hope you have a good day.
Good morning patriciat and what a small world it is sometimes. That was where I was stationed there in 1962 for 6 months before being posted on to Malta.
Good Morning Alan petiton signed. I saw some heartbreaking pictures last year to the birds that had been killed. Lets hope this can be stopped.
Alan petition signed but surely the EU who hold the purse things could do something as the Maltese are breaking the rules and if the EU held back some of the grants until they sorted this out it would be sorted quickly. This morning we have the big yellow thing in the sky but then it started to snow even tho' the sun was shinning the snow didn't last for long but the wind was blowing about a bit.

Afternoon all
Been snowing here off and on all morning ... I got caught in a blizzard coming back from shopping mission ... but, like George, the big yellow orb was there at the same time ... bitterly cold too.
Alan - have signed the petition ... thanks for the info
I've been enjoying reading about the magpies ... for 2 years I had a pair of magpies visiting my feeders , one with a deformed beak (overshot I think is the correct term?) and one with a broken leg (its lower leg stuck out at right angles) ... I named them Hopalong and Beaky :)) It didn't stop them having perfect offspring, then last year Hopalong disappeared and Beaky appeared with a new 'normal' mate!
Thanks to everyone else for chat/history etc
Take care!

Afternoon all,
Thanks to everyone who signed the petition. I also tried to sign for Lady P but I will have to find another email address for her. Should be able to get round it ok.
I would have posted earlier today but we had a power cut of about an hour and a half from 11:15 this morning. It is amazing how we take power for granted and was a bit lost until I adjusted and went to do something that doesnt need power. Namely car cleaning duty.
Thanks to everyone for the links, chat and history lessons. I was never much good at history at school. Much better at geography.
Weather today started off a bit wet but has improved since with sunny intervals.
Temp 3.4c , Wind NW 9mph , Sunrise 07:46 , Sunset 16:40.
Forgot to put in a link to Birdguides photo of the year 2009 competition:

Latest from the Dunedin ospreys nesting notes. Chicks are due to hatch soon:
1/28/10 - Day 30. Cool nights, warm afternoons in Pinellas County. The cam pair of ospreys are among the earliest nesters in the county. While they near hatching other pairs in Pinellas are still nest building and mating. Some nesting sites are shuffling around, particularly in the northern portion of the county. A storm on April 14th of 2009 took down multiple nests, including some nesting trees. Those pairs are still shopping for real estate in some cases. BW
1/29/09 - Day 31. Early this morning the mother turned the eggs and she also turned to face the camera directly. Right before 7am the darkness began to lift. Sunrise at 7:20am. It looks like another beautifl day in Dunedin, Florida. She began calling for her mate at 7:02am.
