Weekly Chat, Sunday, January 24 2010

Hi everyone. Happy Sunday!  As usual, check out the last few entries of the previous week's chat to find out who left a plant at the supermarket checkout counter and ate a bag of chocolate donuts for lunch.

Brought Oro for home visit today; was lovely and sunny and daughter sat in the garden feeding him treats. He had a little snooze and then while my daughter took a nap Oro and I went to the beach and walked along the grassy area behind the sand for about a mile or so. (No trash cans to crash into!)  Marvellous afternoon with brisk breeze and big surf, but now they're forecasting more rain for Monday through Wednesday!

Hopefully we will be seeing a sight like this before too long Alan.

  • Just a quick post, have just found this link to an eagle cam.

  • Margobird: Thanks for the clips but I could not get the first one to play. The Orangutan and the dog were hilarious. I could not imagine Hamish putting up with that.

We had just finished taking the thunderdog for his walk when the rain started and now it is quite dark and wet.

For all the dog lovers Crufts is at the NEC in Birmingham from the 11th to 14th March. I think that it may be televised on More4 and some live coverage will be on the website too.

I just found this quotation on my calendar which you might like:

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”

  • Lovely quotation Alan.  Have just tried the bald eagle cam and it is working for me although you do have to wait until it loads..

  • Latest from Dunedin ospreys in Florida nesting notes:

1/27/10 - Today winds are NE at 12 mph, it is sunny and 51 degrees in Dunedin, Florida.  The anticipation is building as this is day 29.

  • I just love the light at this time of the evening in Estonia:

  • Great capture shot again Alan and how do you manage to always be in the right place at the right time to get these shots.  I saw some deer again earlier today.  Thanks for the news from the Dunedin Osprey as well.

Lily's cub is being fed again I think with all those contented noises.  She/He has been very vocal today.  I am completely mesmerised by this and watching all the time.

  • Margobird,  just had to say thank you for the orangutan and hound link. It is well worth watching.

  • Agree with you about the light on the Estonia cam, Alan.  Also enjoyed your pic of the dog sled and your wonderful quote about sitting on a hillside with a dog- how true!  Never heard that one before.

Hi Margobird  - did enjoy hearing about your time in the army, I was going to ask you about that as I bet you could tell lots of stories. What bad luck about your eye trouble.  (my OH has had the cataract operation last summer, & was amazed at how much better he could see, afterwards).

Sue C:  Many thanks for the help in accessing old threads, you are as they say, a star!

Thanks to AQ for interesting look at the history of Australia:  its certainly a country with a history like no other, & always find it fascinating in that all in all, it all happened in only a couple of hundred years.

Heron77  Glad to hear that you do clean the windows, occasionally !!  ;- )

Diane:  Always love it when they show that amazing migration of the beautiful Monarch butterflies on TV.

patricat:  What a lovely story about another Meg- I'm sure this puppy will be a much loved little thing, as she is in  a good home & will have some visiting grandchildren to play with too, sometimes,, as well as (I hope) the company of our dog occasionally. Apparently she is settling in well, & no longer 'cries' at night.

georgeg:   Send some of that sunshine over here!

Cirrus:    Good to hear from you again, hope all is ok with you.

Original Goldfinch: many thanks for the  link. It’s exactly what I want but as soon as I arrive at the page in Firefox browser it crashes the browser (have informed Mozilla) and in Internet Explorer I cannot find anything to click on that starts the video !!!!!!!!!!!!    :(

I am not an expert, so maybe someone else will give you a fix for this.  Meanwhile, I shall just describe what I see and do, using Internet Explorer as my browser and RealPlayer as my media player.

Go to the Africam website.  Opening page has a "mini screen" showing it's using RealPlayer.  It automatically runs an introduction showing lioness drinking and announcement that what you want will follow - and it does, no clicking involved.  There is an option to view in full-screen view.

Maybe you need to (1) get Real Player or (2) if you already have it, get an update or (3) possibly an alternative (maybe default) media player is disabling RealPlayer so you need to enable it.

Hope you get sorted - it's good viewing.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
