This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
Thanks SueC - good to know all is well with Caledonia. Perhaps the fishing conditions are better where she has gone. I wonder if she still 'hangs around' with the female friend she was seen with a few months ago?
Caledonia updated to 28.04.2013 on GE. Little change , one trip of note to Embalse de Guadiamar on 28th.
Thanks Alan and always honest and these tracking maps I cannot get used to but I do know things are ok and that is all I want to know. Thank you and it is so wonderful Caledonia is in Spain and you all know I am not a fan of tracking but being honest this is so interesting how settled Caledonia has been in Spain. Green J and Beatrice winter there and now Caledonia and it will be interesting to see how Caledonia does.
It seems Roberto is still keeping an eye on what Caledonia is up to.
I spotted this article - attributed to Roberto and Richard - on the website of Quercus, which is a Spanish nature magazine.
The text as published here deals with Caledonia's origins at Loch Garten and compares her migration with Alba's.
Thanks Sue. That is really. I do not suppose he mentions the Spanish ospreys at all?
Tiger Signature
Tiger,
No, the article on the website is specifically about Caledonia. I wonder if there might be a longer version in the magazine - this is from the current edition.
Richard's latest comment in the Blog.....
"Caledonia.....has spent most of her time over the last week on the Huelva or the Rio Guadalquivir where it joins the Huelva. So fishing must be good! She did make a couple of trips. On 25th April she travelled 10 km E to a small stretch of water on what appears to be a quarry just S of Jarilla and returned to the Huelva by 16.00 hours. On 28th April she made a round trip W of some 45 km and at the farthest point she revisited the Embalase (reservoir) De Guadiamar which she also visited on 20 April. She was back at the Huelva by 12.00 hours.
The data now reverts to two data points per day and is available for download every 7 days. The first such report should be on 8 May."
Thank You Sue C. Are you likely to issuing your Stats Spreadsheet please, I know we can always see it on T&C website, but always need to get on line for that, its good to have a copy.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
Always look forward to reports on Caledonia. Wonderful she is doing so well. It would be great for some more pics of her.
Is there any sign that Caledonia may be thinking of a trip back to Britain this year? It has happened before with at least two young ospreys.
