Weekly Chat (non-osprey topics) Sun 22 July 2012

Welcome ALL to a new week from chilly Adelaide (4.0 C min overnight here near the beach).

  • Summer again today – and quite hot.  Seem to have busy all day – but that did include ironing!

Wendy – I do hope you can get some attention for that poor Dog.

Linda – sounds like a very busy day yesterday – and I thought you had said you would be sitting outside!  Another trip to Buzz’s home from home this weekend?

Annette – pleased to see that GrandDaughter is coping well with the situation, and that there are temporary arrangements in place, but so sad and confusing for poor wee Delilah.  Lovely pix of the Hummer – and your wonderful front garden!

AQ – weather sounds as changeable as ours!

Margo – sorry about the Mumps – I hope all will be well for Nephew and his wife.

Dibnlib – sad for your neighbour to lose her husband at such a young age, but glad he is spared further suffering.  Pleased that both Sons were there for her.  Sounds like a pleasant walk today, ending up with a soggy doggy!  Sorry about Dillon’s ear – poor boy, he’s been having a rough time.

Alan – why do we have Team GB in the Ol****cs?  Surely it should be Team UK to include Northern Ireland?  I thought the Beamish (Co. Durham) tragedy was not one of the landslips, but a boy being run over by his father on a Traction Engine.  Maybe you meant the tunnel tragedy at Beaminster (Dorset)?  Sorry Lady P is unwell yet again – I hope the virus soon clears.

Need to go and check veggies and hanging baskets for water after the sunshine!  First Tomato was nearly ripe last time I saw them – yippee!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hello all and a very quick post from me, mostly to say Thankyou for all your chat and pics etc. Always appreciated and enjoyed.

Life here much and such. Better weather so OH and I have been tidying in the garden, as you do.

Elderly neighbour is doing everything that she can to make my daily visits longer. Annoying, but who is to say that I won't be the same if I get to 94 :-)) There are times when I want to phone her NOK and say 'so who exactly would be keeping an eye on your Aunt if I didn't?' Plus her other neighbour who is elderly and unwell but still makes soup and other things for our neighbour.  Wendy - be careful.

SiL came up yesterday to see his children and came to visit us in the afternoon. I could bang their heads together (Daughter and SiL) because the atmosphere was great while they were here.

    Take care, all.

  • OG : You are right , I did mean Beaminster. Must be the heat affecting my brain. Not sure why it is not Team UK.

  • LINDY   Hope you enjoy your trip away.

Good news for Moray Firth Dolphins. We are probably heading to Chanonry tomorrow early evening so fingers crossed we see some. Hear is the link if you wish. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-18981917

  • Evening all: Will catch up tomorrow. Take care!

  • Good Morning ALL, What with OH's sister's big birthday last weekend, our own Wedding Anniversary on Monday, when our children visited and stayed the night, then we played a bowls match on Wednesday followed by a meal, we don't seem to have had much time to relax. This morning OH's sister rang to tell me that she had fallen down the stairs and doctor was sending her for an xray on her back. She had agreed to baby sit her 1 year old grandson this weekend, Friday to Sunday, to allow her son and his wife to go to a wedding, so guess who is going over to help. The grandson is just starting to walk and is teething. My OH is sitting here saying,  "Beam me up Scotty".

I have been reading this page, late at night but haven't had chance to reply. I noticed the comments between OG/ Alan about Team GB /Team UK and found this article, including other peoples replies,   http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/rogermosey/2009/09/why_team_gb.html

Sorry, I haven't time to reply to all your news but I must help OH in the garden before the rain comes tomorrow.Hopefully life will return to normal next week. Best wishes to you ALL.

  • Good morning all and another very hot sunny day but according to the forecast it is going to cool down by tomorrow.  Feel sorry for my OH as he appointments in London today, the last one being at 5.30 so he will not be home much before 10.00 tonight. I think he is going to find it very busy up there and even hotter than it is here.

Alan  I have to agree with you regarding the Olympics, it is getting very boring as it seems to have completely taken over and is causing many difficulties for people trying to go about their daily business in London.  It seems too that every day brings more embarassing news, the latest being the mix up over North Korea and South Korea flags.  Could not have been worse because of the current situation between them.  We will also be selective in our viewing.  Tennis, gymnastics, tennis and sychronised swimming will be our favourites.  BBC have set up a load of channels for the Olympics so at least who have no interest at all there will be other things to watch.  Poor Lady P she is suffering with her health, hope she will feel better soon.    How is Hamish getting on with the very warm weather.  Billie takes a turn round the garden early morning and then retreats to the top of my display cabinet where it i reasonably call.

Annette  I think the problem with the oranges in our supermrkets is down to freshness, goodness knows how long they are kept and as you say they do spary them to make them look good, unfortunately it does not work.  Guess you are right when you mention just 2 murders.  It is only in the last few years that murders have happened in this part of the world.  Nearly always to do with drugs and it seems there are numerous Somali drug gangs who are coming into the country and seem to favour holiday resorts.  Places that used to be safe and respectable are no longer and there are certain places where we don't feel safe at night.

dibnlib so pleased that both sons were able to see their father before he passed away.  thanks for the links to Samson and the dophins and hope you get t see some today.  Samson obviously knows where he is well off.  Poor Dillon is in the wars, he must be costing a fortune in vet bills but we would do all we can for our pets.

OG I was going to post about where the landslips were but see Alan has already done so.  I did see the sad story about the boy who was knocked over by hid Dad, what an awful thing to happen.  One can only imagine how he must feesl.

Heather sorry your elderly neighbour is trying to delay you more, it must be so tricky for you.  I was in a way pleased to read that SIL had come to visit his family and had not left it until Christmas.  I can well imagine your frustration though and I hope it does not upset the family yet again.

That's me for now off to do some lunch and keep cool, take care all and have a good day.

  • Good morning Brenda nice to see you, had been wondering if you were OK but can now see how busy you have been.

  • Morning all: Was up the orange tree for hours yesterday; distributed some to neighbors then took five large bags to the Food Bank. Phew! Managed to clean out a lot of useless twigs and branches while I was up there, which will make it easier next year.  I asked the Food Bank folks about their Backyard Bounty program, where volunteers pick excess fruit from residential gardens for the Bank - I was looking ahead to next year - but right now they're only going to homes with more than five fruit trees.  The only oranges remaining now are way at the top of the tree - and here's me with three large containers of fresh-sqeezed OJ in the fridge!  Will take one to daughter today - we're going out to lunch and will Skype g'daughter and Ms D.

dibnlib: Missed any news of Samson, but always good to hear a happy ending.

Heather: Hmmm - why not call neighbor's NOK? It must be hard to live alone and need help; I'm beginning to wonder how I'd be in that situation.....   Also wonder if your D and SiL are having second (third?) thoughts...

Brenda: Oh lucky you - a one-year old who's teething! Just as you were probably anticipating a quiet weekend.  A belated congratulations (don't think I saw a mention of it on here) for your wedding anniversary. Read that link re Team GB/UK - seems like a touchy topic, but must agree with the poster who deemed "Team GB" as a "ghastly phrase" - right up there with "Team USA", etc., etc.

Margo: Hope your OH doesn't get hung up in Olympic traffic chaos. I was interested in reading about the problems - when we had the Games in LA back in - um 86? - employers all over the city changed working hours, staggered shifts, etc., etc., and the much feared gridlock never happened. After everything was back to normal, the big joke was that things were better when the Games were on.  I thnk everywhere was safer when we were growing up.... sigh.

Off to get myself organized. Take care all.

  • Annette - I am in contact with neighbour's NOK - he is a very nice chap, I have met him - but I don't think that he realises just how lonely older folk can be, especially when they are housebound. I am following S's wishes and trying to get her into various Lunch Clubs, etc. As she says, its not just the company that she craves, but Getting Out. OH and I have not gone down that route - taking her out, because he feels that if we start, where does it finish? and I am inclined to agree with him because my experience so far is that sadly, the very old often only see life from their viewpoint and their needs.  OH has a busy life, with all his sporting activities and also we are part of a large family which of course uses up a lot of our time (happily!) Oh dear---- a bit of a dilemma.

Regarding daughter and SiL - who knows. She is adamant at present that she won't go back into the marriage. He has hurt her too many times. I can see that there is still affection between them but that is not enough.
