How many of us are torn between dread and hope for the new day to come?
The peace and quiet of the LG nest is punctuated solely by unalarming chick noises. Long may that last.
IMAGICAT
Take care, Moffer.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Keith, the chick at Loch Garten in 2008 was recovered. EJ put it out of the nest. I was at the centre that day and the staff said it wasn't very nice to find below the nest.
See you tommorow, Moffer. Take care.
Warning! This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar. Approach with extreme edginess.
Hi Barbara
So sorry for this loss. I must say that personally if I had benefit of webcam & saw this happening at my nest I would be up there like a shot. I know it is a difficult decision so I assume RSPB policy must be not to intervene. Is that correct? Makes me wonder how often this happens at nests with no monitoring.
I know last year at my nest the 1st & 3rd eggs to be laid survived to fledge. The smaller chick took a real battering at times but then I saw him start to retaliate & the bigger chick left him alone more.
There are no words to help, as with any loss of life.
Best wishes
Val
One Life - Live It!!

He started to push through the middle but was blocked off. So with the two larger chicks concentrating on blocking a central manouver, he quickly moved up the left hand side and got fed.

Not at all.
Its little memories like that, that make his/her life how ever painfull and short so worthwhile :-)
A very old Shropshire Lad.
Please, please do not take this the wrong way as i too am very new to the blog, I too shed a bucket of tears and still am writing these words, but i'm sure Happysnappy's words were written from a heavy heart as well, the way I read it though was to be thankful for two healthy chicks, who will probably go on to fledge so long as fish is delivered, but noone will forget this little one who gave us so much enjoyment, As difficult as it is, nature can be cruel and believe me I get upset at the slightest sign of cruelty or would love to rescue every creature I see
The next few days will be difficult to get through, knowing what has happened, but it would be nice for everyone to come together, sorry if this is the wrong place to post here or if i've said something to offend then I apologise, I just think we have to view things from both sides
Good morning everyone, and welcome Happysnappa:)
I have deliberately caught up with the posts first before switching the cam on. Dear Little One, after such prolonged suffering, is now at peace. May your spirit soar free.
I couldn't watch your video, MOFFER, of 'The End'. But thank you for providing this record - it must have been horrendous for those of you who were able to watch.
A final thought - though it doesn't matter any more: I'm convinced EJ knew, in the early hours, that something was wrong with Little One. (See Scylla's vid). EJ landed strangely on the nest then seemed cautious in her approach to the chicks, and seemed to hesitate, looking at one of them. If that was the case, it may explain why both chicks seemed to attack him at the end; if something is sensed as ill, or weak, then it will be eliminated from the food chain. Simple in theory, but so so cruel in reality.
To dispel any illusions others may have of those on here who post their feelings, WE ARE NOT IGNORANT OF NATURE AND THE WAY IT WORKS. Yes, we get upset - and put ourselves through it year in year out. Why? BECAUSE WE CARE.
I wasn't going to come on again today, but just had to know what was happening to this poor little one, and I am in tears, not just for it dying, but did it really have to suffer so much, right until the end, I can't believe birds so young can be that vicious, and literally want to kill another sibling which is obviously what their aim has always been, and to get rid of it from the nest, maybe someone better than me can reason it, it certainly wasn't just for food, pure evil.
if there was no hope for it and it was getting no food, it would have been kinder to have put it to sleep,
I can't feel any affection for the remaining two at the moment or show any interest.
Fly happily at the bridge little Osprey, you will have a special place in a lot of hearts
The more you rush, the longer it takes
Picture's just went off then back on. EJ's calling and then she flies off.
I think there's an intruder about.
