DAILY UPDATE (LG nest) Sunday 17 June 2012

How many of us are torn between dread and hope for the new day to come?

The peace and quiet of the LG nest is punctuated solely by unalarming chick noises.  Long may that last.

  • Yes it is nature, but we normally we don't see it.  The thing is if we are in a position to watch it, we can help.

  • I do not want to hurt anybody's feelings, but does any of you eat chicken? Or turkey at Christmas? That needs a bird to be killed too. I know the comparison seems strange here, but these are birds too.

  • I'm certain if circumstances had been exceptional like at Dyfi, where the last of three hatched chicks would have died without human help, the LG staff would have intervened.  They same as they did when Odin was trapped because some idiot either didn't know or care for the correct way to disgard fishing line.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Well poor little thing did not even last a whole day from the last condesneding RSPB blog.  I don't think anyone ever wanted RSPB to intervene as it is very much nature in the raw and we are priveledged to be able to see.   Unfortunate that enquiries where taken so out of context and I for one have seen this whole site in a very different light over the last few days.   What we have watched is horrendous and only ever wanted clarification from the experts on what was happening and could they see something positive that we watching could not - this request by many, has now been twisted by many others as not being intelligent enough to know what is happening and to be able to cope with watching - the point was missed both by other bloggers and LG staff.   This has turned out to be a horrible few days for all particulary poor little #3 chick who was beyond anybody's help

Rachel, no one is blaming the staff.

Maybe I was misinterpreting, in which case I apologise, but that is what one or two of the recent comments have sounded like.

To quote from a couple of pages back: "I have to say that I have NO respect for the RSPB!!! In this day and age, that chick could have been helped before anything as tragic as this happened!!"

Sounds like pretty direct criticism of the RSPB - and by extension, their employees and volunteers at LG - to me, I'm afraid. Let's not get into an argument about this though. We all have our views, and I know that we are ALL upset at this turn of events.

It does seem particularly sad (from a human perspective at least) that #3 - which may well be Odin's only genetic progeny this year - has died on Father's Day.

  • Good morning all,

I've not watched the nest this morning, reading the posts it is pretty clear what has happened is pretty much unprecedented.. Seasond watcher Tiger says he has never witnessed an event such as this...

So with that in mind I would fully agree with Rachael's post at 09:50 Hrs. You are spot on and there is nothing that the centre could do nor should have done.

This is a disaster for wee3 it was just hatched too late to be able to compete on a fair platform for food and as he became weaker the cycle just got faster. Sad as this is it is not a disaster for the nest, the remaining two are big healthy Osprey chicks, if I had offered you all that at the start of the season you would all have been happy with it.

RIP wee3 bravery or bravo. You gave it your best shot.. You will long be remembered.

All for one and one for all.

  • Tiger That would be a start. As it is now blogger are dismissed  when they voice concern.

We have all seen nest fighting which is  yelling , pushing and pecking to establish hierarchy or fighting if food is scarce . Not the  vicious unprovoked attacks day after day that we saw   Siblings killing siblings can't be that common therefore  some intervention should have been done in this case

What I would like to see come out of this is a recognition that the bloggers know what they are talking about. When they flag up concerns they are real.

Those bloggers who expressed concern on Thursday night (14th June) have been proved to be correct.

Patily. I was being sarcastic about the "so called" RSPB I watched 2008 when Nethy was attacking Little Yin and it died.

Sorry I have no idea what you are referring to I have made no comment about RSPB?????

  • Lmac. I agree. I think the blogs showed what they think, but did not really communicate with us about our concerns in a meaningful way. I wonder if and how much they read from our forum? Honestly, I have never seen such an attack before. Awful. I wonder what the next blog would say??????????

  • Good morning all. Just logged in to see what's happening and am so sad to read the news. Poor, poor little thing. Let's hope its suffering is all over now.

It doesn't help I know, but perhaps there was weakness with it that we couldn't see and that's why its siblings turned on it. Perhaps also why EJ didn't do more to protect it? Just a thought.
