Weekly Chat, Sunday December 27 2009

Hi everyone.

Welcome to the final weekly chat of 2009.  Remember to check out the last few posts of last week's chat for the latest posts.

  • TerryM: Hmm. Making I'm making an incorrect assumption re Phoebe's nest.

OG: Yes, and I can graze on cheese as easily as I can graze on chocolate.  Still enjoying being lazy; daughter still waiting for op schedule - think all the medical decision-makers went on vacation. Should hear when tomorrow.

Just had some cheese. You see, we had some home made bread wanted using up - so had to eat some cheese with it.  But this was no ordinary cheese - this was Gjetost from Norway - made with condensed milk and tastes like a cross between Marmite (slight saltiness) and Caramac (slight sweetness) - do you remember Caramac? can't get it any more - but Nestles (who took over MacIntosh) now make a caramel Kit-Kat!

Hope your daughter will soon get on the theatre list and not have to wait too long.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG: Don't remember Caramac, but we have Kit-Kat and I heard a rumor that they'd made a dark chocolate version, but have never seen it.   Well, of course cheese and bread - with wine too I hope.  OMG a cheese made with condensed milk. We've got some double-cream Brie and crackers lurking in the kitchen and some nice red wine too; shall probably dig into that while I consider dinner options (which leftovers to eat, etc.). Managed to rouse myself to walk over to the library, which has been closed for several days and was mobbed with readers anxious for their literary fix. Got a mystery and a biography of Paul Newman - all great escapist stuff.  Think I'll take a quick drive down to the beach to see if the ocean is still there, then back home for some of that Brie....

  • Hi everyone.

TerryM:  Thanks for the reminder about sending off used stamps.  It's something I always seem to forget about.

Alan:  Thanks for the hummingbird link.  They're fascinating wee birds.

dibnlib:  That's a fantastic picture of Culloden Forest.  Very atmospheric.

Blackbird:  Hope you have a great 2010.

OG:  That's sad news that they don't make Caramac any more.  That stuff must've had about a billion calories but it tasted great.  I didn't realise they'd stopped making it til I read your post.

Annette:  They sell a dark chocolate Kit-Kat in Britain and it's very nice.  I'm sure it'd be very popular if sold in America.

    Stay safe everyone.

  • Thank you Diane & Auntie for the snow. Must be the reason it was only 29 C yesterday. Caerann & Margobird - Get well soon. It’s not fair to be sick when everyone is celebrating. Auntie – That golden eagle is a wise bird, taking his vacation flying to a nice eating spot LOL. I recently discovered P D James and I have been raiding the library shelves. A little weird when I don’t read the books in sequence. Annette – Phones at night. My first thought is always that it means trouble. Why don’t I assume it is a wrong number? OG - Sorry I missed you yesterday. The appendages (future sons-in-law) get on well. fsil#1 asked fsil#2 if he would feed the animals while he & Dau#1 are on holiday. It coincides with Dau#2’s work trip, so fsil#2 will be busy that week. The animals are only dog, kitten, hermit crabs & 2 fish tanks!!!!!!! I am so glad they live closer to each other than us <grin>. The appendages (grandchildren) bicker. Miss 13 expects to be the centre of attention.

Our Sunday lunch went well. Turkey, roast potatoes, broccoli, carrot & peas. Followed by fruit salad & cream. The mini Xmas puddings were a great success – none left <sigh> I made them on Saturday and sampled one. A day later I had another and it tasted much nicer. I’ll type the recipe & post it later. I had a bag of sweets (snakes & jubes) which I donated to Grand-dau to take to camp. (If they last until next week LOL.) Dau#2 gave me a photomaker kit to convert slides or B&W negatives to digital. Oh dear, more technology to learn. Not to mention finding old boxes of slides.

I didn’t get a chance to turn on computer yesterday. I have been catching up while getting the washing done. Hello to everyone I have forgotten. I haven’t had a good start to the day. Monday, washing day with 2 loads. Alas I forgot to replace the suds-save hose when I cleaned the exhaust screens a few days ago. So I accidentally washed the laundry floor & the back door mat, as well as watering the lawn outside the back door with sudsy water. Luckily the floor will dry quickly as the temp heads to 32 C.

  • Hey AQ:  Well you won't have to wash the laundry floor again for a while - or water the lawn.  My niece and nephew gave my sister one of those photo-frame thingies where the image keeps changing and they had to figure that out too (I'm not even sure they like it).  Lunch sounds good, especially those fast-disappearing mini puddings.   I'm a big PD James fan.  If any bloggers read Sue Grafton's books (A is for ****, B is for ***, etc), they're set in a town called Santa Theresa, but it's really Santa Barbara, where Grafton lives most of the time. They're good too, but you really have to read them in sequence.

Off to rummage in refrigerator. Wish I had some pickled onions....

  • Hey Annette, I have seen Sue Grafton's books in library and wondered about them. I bet the first half of the alphabet has been culled. I shall have to do my tour around other suburban libraries. (Not sure how many of my library cards are still current - a few years ago I had seven !!!) My favourite who-dunnit author is Elizabeth George. I read Peter Robinson for the Yorkshire settings and Rebus for Edinburgh. Thanks for reminding me of the pickled onions. Nearly lunchtime. Salad (despite Himself grumbling).

  • AQ, sorry about the wet floor. Not great but at least it won't take long to dry. Those puds so sound lovely. Stay cool.

Annette/OG I'm ashamed to say I am not a big fan of cheese. Fine on a bit of toast melted but the stuff that looks runny, yuck!! LOL I never have appreciated trhe finer things in life.

Hope everyone has a good day and happy Monday:)

  • Mini Christmas Puddings

500 gm dark fruit cake or Xmas pudding / 150 gm milk chocolate melted / 1/8 cup port (or brandy or sherry) / white chocolate bits / green & red snakes or jubes

Cut snakes or jubes into small pieces as holly leaves & berries. Crumble cake and mix in melted chocolate & port. Roll into golfball-sized balls. Melt white chocolate and drizzle over. Garnish with "holly". Drizzle a few at a time, as the choc sets quickly. This mixture made 17. Taste better after a day.

I used my boiled fruit cake recipe (do you want that too?!!!) and added a few chopped crystallized cherries to the above mixture. Next time I shall make more mini pudds LOL

  • Hi, all.

Of course, put me down as one of the owl fans on this site! I also collect little owl ornaments/figurines.

re: "Grazing on chocolate" Now that's my idea of fun!

Gary: We also had that freakishly warm weather before our part of this storm hit. We had a temp of 13C/55F before the snow. Tonight, it will be -12C/10F. Like Auntie said, it is a little early in the winter here in Indiana to have so such snow and intense weather. OG: Weather patterns do seem increasingly strange all over the world...

Margobird: Happy belated birthday, and I hope you feel better very soon! The Donkey Sanctuary sounds wonderful! Caerann: I also hope you are rallying and that the trip out didn't set you back. I prescribe that you both curl up with a good book and some good tea and rest for a few days.

AQ: Your little flood event sounds like something I would do. :-)
