Weekly Chat, Sunday, December 20 2009

Hi folks: Don't forget to check the last pages of the previous chat for links, comments, and all the usual twaddle.  :-)

  • good morning to everyone      swans are protected in the UK aswell.ibelieve they are known as royal birds so texhnically only the royal family can eat them, though i think they are much more into pheasies. If you really want one for a big occasion you can apply to the Queen.

i was going to mention we have a fair bit of snow here in the Highland but as i have just read the reports of the weather in the Eastern seaboard i will just say i hope everyone of our friends is OK

  • Morning All from TI,

Very disappointed with the Copenhagen summit. What a waste of time and resources. It could all have been done by video conferencing, I suppose we should have expected the outcome.

Snow seems really bad in the US. We have chaos here if we have 2 inches never mind 2 feet. I too hope that Gary and his wife are ok.

We had another covering of snow overnight on top of the ice and it has re frozen. I dont recall so much snow before Christmas. It is usually late january or February when it comes if at all.

    Weather

    Sunny,dry Temp -4.1c feels like -10c , Sunrise 08:08 Sunset 15:48.

Well done to Chris and Ola on Strictly last night.

  • Hello!

Snowing here, as I speak. None in the night, just v. cold frost, freezing the little bit of snow we had yesterday, but now its doing it properly, as we were promised.  Nothing like others have had in other parts of the country, of course, & bears no comparison to the blizzards in USA - do hope all our friends there are OK.

Enjoyed the dancing on Strictly last night very much, we had voted for Chris & Ola previously but decided not to vote in the final & just watch the outcome-  what a triumph for all concerned it was.  F.A.B. Alan

Afraid I don't have much confidence in politicians of any kind, & expecting so many diverse people to agree on anything 'around a table' is probably too much to ask.

  • I agree entirely with the comments about Coppenhagen. Just a lot of 'hot air'  and posturing, with no results, but an extremely large carbon footprint.

I certainly hope Gary and his wife are safe. That storm sounds horrific.

We couldn't manage to get to church this morning. Snow and sleet fell overnight on top of existing snow so roads are lethal. Looks lovely but getting fed up with it now. No hope of any gritting around here and stupidly we hadn't bought any new supplies ourselves.

  • Hi folks.  We had snow overnight, too but the roads are clear as the sun has shone for a while.  Hope it keeps dry as I have to go to a Carol Service tonight and it's about 10 miles away.  Don't know if the gritters will be out.  I, too, hope Gary and his wife are OK.  We really don't know what bad snowstorms are like, though I'm old enough to remember February 1963 when NI was paralysed by a huge snowfall and there was no public transport for  days.

  • Watched Countrytracks this morning which featured a very young Roy Dennis in 1988 and Richard Thaxton and Ben Fogle at LG. Stars of the show were Rothes, Mallachie & Garten.

There is an eagle on the webcam at Store Mosse:

Intrestingly the two satellite tagged Finnish White tailed eagles Junnu and Meri are just north of Store Mosse.

  • Afternoon all. Very worried about Gary and his wife. It is hard to imagine weather conditions like that. Although we have our freezes and snows it`s never that drastic and our houses are very warm.

Alan, it would be nice to see Junnu and Meri in Store Mosse cam :)

I am having some troubles with my wireless Internet, probably due the winds and blizzard we are having now, so won`t post much this evening

    Stay safe everyone!

  • Morning all:  Snow levels back east have set records; here's a link to viewer's photos sent to a Connecticut (Gary's state) TV station. http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/weather/photo_gallery/winter-storm-pictures-dec-19-20-2009.  If we don't hear from Gary, could be that they've lost power.  Alan/BrendaH: Also very disappointed in Copenhagen summit, though did hear the city had "offset" the carbon footprint of the conference by some means I can't remember. In the meantime, we have big fight over healthcare reform here - daren't get started.  :-((

Have bit of running around to do today and may go to gym; otherwise will continue unpacking books, etc.  Take care all.

  • Hi everyone.

Happy new week and a very happy Sunday.

Weather reports from the local area.  All I can say is it's been fairly cold here, not much snow has been added and the front lawn looks like a very pale-faced man with a couple of days growth.  Underfoot conditions are also a bit dodgy and I've taken to using my garden shed as a barrier when I'm sliding about the garden puting bird food out.  Of course this is nothing compared to what people in the east coast of America are going through.

Annette:  Don't know if the tradition of last minute Christmas decorations is completely dying off, but theres a growing tendancy among shops etc. to start Christmas earlier every year.

Diane:  The weather in the east cost of America must be frightening for the folk there.  It's amazing how quickly a snow front can develop.  The closest thing from this side of the pond I can think of is the Big Freeze of early 1987.  I like the Stephen King comment.

AQ:  It's really amazing some of the stuff that comes from translation websites.  Up until recently the translation of the German for Goldcresr was "winter gold Chicken" on google.  On Bing it comes up as "Winter Firecrest"  Totally agree with the points about the Copenhagen summit.  Have these people never heard of video conferencing?  $159,144.08 for Christmas is way too expensive if you ask me.  And that's using the cheaper options.

    Stay safe and warm everyone.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Good Day/Evening to all:

Gloomy with a dusting of snow here in Chicago, temps 30f/-1c with wind chills 23f/-5c. I've managed to catch a nasty cold so slept most of Saturday and will probably nap for as much as possible today as well.

Djoan: Thanks for the beautiful card, it was very thoughtful of you.    =O)

Gary: Loved Poppy and hope you, the Mrs. and horses are doing fine after the nor'easter you had.

I too remember making paper chains with colored construction paper and paste in either kindergarten or the 1st grade. (1968 or 1969)

Last week I had posted seeing 4 legged creatures in the background of the Decorah Eagle cam and here is who they are, courtesy of Nora of the Raptor Resource forum:
