Weekly Chat, 6th December 2009

See that Annette has been too busy perhaps, to start a new week, so I'm doing the honours. Rather wet in this part of the world this morning, so doing lots of tidying & Christmas preparing stuff.

AQ has been a lot of help to me in finding more information about my South Australian ancestors, for which I shall be eternally grateful.  I've only been working on my family tree since early this year, but it is very addictive, and I am well and truly HOOKED!!!  I spend at least some time every day chasing 'dead rellies' around my computer, and I have found more live rellies than I ever dreamed I had!!!

Oh I am a big fan of family trees too. I managed to get back to the 18th century with mine.

Any recommendations on what software to use for recording your results? The Irish 1911 census went online recently and that has been ever so helpful.

There's more than you could shake a stick at, Tiger. There's lots of software packages available, usually at a price (I've never come across a really good free one). I have my full tree with Genes Reunited and I am also a member of Ancestry.co.uk.

  • Gary: I think our K-Mart is the oldest one in the state (well, certainly looks like it...) and all us Target fans are afraid stuffy city fathers (who probably never go shopping) don't know the difference. The LA Times the other month did a big article on Target and mentioned "piped in music." Obviously, that reporter has never been shopping there, since all devoted Target-goers know that Target doesn't play any music or make loud brash announcements over their PA system!!

  • I have set up a countdown clock on my pc and at the moment it reads 104 days 4 hours 36 minutes and 20 seconds. No idea how to display it on here though.

  • Alan: I guess that means you're stuck reporting countdown progress to us! :-)

  • Annette, getting slightly worried you know too much about Target and their "piped in music" policy LOLOL I just enjoy the shop and gets lots of good stuff there, that's as much as I know. I think your town should put a question on the next ballot and get a Target in that way!

Alan, yes if you could keep that up for the next 104 days that would be great.......................

  • The book we bought last night is actually called “Scottish Birds – Culture and Tradition” by Robin Hull, published 2001 by Mercat Press (good publisher too!)

Caerann – hope this current matter has a good outcome for you – take care – hope to hear from you soon – and keep safe in all that weather!

AQ – I used up my brown paper and can’t seem to find any to buy – not that I need it urgently right now.  My mother would be horrified at me wanting to buy it – when I was young, it all used to be recycled from shopping which came home wrapped in brown paper parcels tied with string (which also was recycled!)!   Most calendars here come with envelopes for posting, sorry to hear yours don’t.  How interesting your research must be – and so good of you to do it to help others.

Liz LFW – loved the hoglet picture – what big ears it has, but such a sweet face!            Annette – glad the shopping trip was a success – and what a healthy lunch!!  Here it gets dark about 3:30pm now but about 11:00pm in summer!  Pleased you took some time out this morning after all your rushing about earlier this week.

Wattle – so pleased for you that you have been finding unknown relatives in such a short space of time!

Our cleaner decided today that she would remove the construction dust from the ensuite for us, so I am about to start moving my stuff in!  She seems to be working out well - even announced that she will come 31st December because she doesn’t like New Year’s Eve – amazing how many locals have told me that since we moved here!

Roof trim men had a happier (dry) day today, with sunshine, but at times the sun had to push through mist, and it’s quite chilly tonight.  The work should finish tomorrow – then think about a next project for January!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG, great work and I would have a breather for at least a couple of weeks before starting anything major!

Auntie, I'm afraid that link didn't work for me either.

Alan, love the reindeer. Very arty getting the refection in the window as well

Lindybird, sounds a nice afternoon, your own private screening:)

Dibnlib, didn't you dog feel the spines of the hedgehogs?

I got slobbered on by a Great Dane this afternoon. A doggie store has opened up not far from us and I went in today for some dog treats. He was lovely and liked the fuss but was BIG. I ended up buying him a treat as well which he was chewing as I left:)

Hi Alan, what exactly is your clock counting down towards?

  • I hope our US friends are not snowed under. The blizzard made it to our TV news & papers. Is this sort of weather normal? Or is it like SA's November heatwave, a record? We are still having cool days, so great for getting things done. The occasional hot day is bearable.  Liz LFW - What a little sweetie is your hoglet. Wattle - I'm afraid you now have a severe addiction - family history LOL - no cure. Tiger - I still use ancient software called "Reunion". No longer available. I am rusty about what to use but there are several freeware programs on the internet. Download for free, try them out. Make sure they have GEDCOM which is a thingie that transfers your data to a new prog if you change. Apparently Alan has inside knowledge - he knows exactly when EJ is going to return LOL.

  • Sandy : The clock is counting down to the best guess scenario as to when EJ and or Odin will return to the nest at Loch Garten.
