Weekly Chat, Sunday November 29,2009

Evening/morning!. Hope it's a good week for all.  Check the previous blog for the latest adventures of  Emma Peel and Steed plus recent posts from the usual suspects.   :-)

Emma - what a whirl!  Hope daughter's new boyfriend isn't headed back to Afghanistan any time soon.

EDIT: Oh this is interesting, in the following sentence, I typed the name of Germany's controlling political party during the late 30s/early 40s and it was replaced by asterisks!  Just watched a great Netflix DVD - The Rape of Europa - about the pillaging of art by the *** and the subsequent repatriation of (most of) it after the war. Really interesting with footage I'd never seen before. After that, even more leftover Txgiving pie and rerun of Bridget Joans's Diary on telly while perusing latest Xmas catalogs. Have a good Sunday!

  • Thank you OG and BrendaH.

Lindybird, the lights will be on tonight. I have them on a timer but when they go up they go on!! I don't know what it is like over there but here, a lot of people put up lights over this last weekend.

  • Welcome back and farewell, as appropriate, to our travellers.

Dibnlib – Your mention of neighbours looking out for your mother reminded me of many many years ago, when we still had milk delivered. One morn, our milk delivery was late, I seen Himself on his way to work and fed the little ones. I forgot about it. About 9 am a phone call from the old lady across the road "Are you alright dear? You haven’t collected your milk." I was touched, and somewhat embarrassed. She lived alone after her husband died and I thought I was keeping an eye on her. Another memory – One New Years Eve, noticing our lights still on after midnight, she phoned to wish us a HNY.

Annette – Lost - Why don’t you do what my daughter calls "The Mum Thing". She would lose something. I would walk into the room and suggest "Have you tried there?" "No, it wouldn’t be in that drawer/shelf/whatever." "Well, look anyway." And guess what – Mum would "find" it again. After a while I only had to walk into the room for the same result. LOL.

Yesterday a garbage collection truck ran down a steep drive into a house. The driver had got out to shift some bins. The bad news – the house owners had just about completed renovations. The good news – they hadn’t moved any furniture in and the builder had just left the room after final checks.

Stop press – I didn’t see anything about the pandas in the newspaper today. Oh dear such fleeting fame <grin> Last news was that they were settling in well and eating our South Aussie specially-grown-for-them bamboo.

  • AQ, what lovely memories of your neighbour. How nice she was looking out:)

Such a shame about the garbage truck, at least no one was hurt. On the Panda front, how nice to have thier own special food grown for them:) Hope it is still cool there. Been raining on and off all day here, very miserable

  • Good evening everyone and Happy St Andrew's day from Bonnie Dundee!  Thank you to all those who have sent good wishes from around the globe.  So cold here today not much wildlife around but at least the rain has stopped for now.  Belated Happy Birthday to Gary.  Enjoying the chat.  Interesting that Rothes has moved again.  I will definitely be making a donation to the LG generator fund during the season of goodwill.  Was surprised to see the Christmas tree fully decorated and lit when I went to work this morning.  Seemed a tad early,  Will start on our Christmas decorations at the weekend and hope to get the Christmas card writing underway on Wednesday - I have a day off work.  Yippee. 'Tis the season to be jolly!

  • Thanks Emma. I see it is chilly where you are. Most "town" trees are already decorated and lit here so I'm a few days behind:) Wednesday is something worth looking forward to.

  • Hi Gary.  Yes our town centre lights were switched on on Friday as part of a big 'homecoming' Christmas festival with a fireworks display and laser light shows.  It all happened when I was at nephew's wedding out of town so I missed it unforunately.   Good to see nephew 'settling down' though.  Hope you have a 'wee dram' to celebrate your birthday on St Andrew's Day.  Cheers.  Lang may yer lum reek!

  • Emma, OK, I need a translation for the last sentence!!!!

  • Oh, sorry, I should have added that.  Literally - Long may your chimney smoke.  Its still said in (this part of) Scotland when you say 'Cheers', especially at birthday celebrations and New Year.  Sort of wishing you many years of good health...

  • Emma, thank you for the translation and thank you for the wishes!

    Had a great day.

Hope everyone has a super Tuesday and catch up then

  • Evening/morning all : Whew. Been in the LA area most of the day test-driving sofas! Found a couple we could've napped on right away but restrained ourselves. Nothing purchased yet.  Was in one store where they were playing Christmas tunes performed on a bagpipe!

Djoan: How nice that you helped godson with car. It's nice to help these kids out isn't it (as long as they put out some effort).

Margobird: Bravo for staying upright! Assume you put bricks in your boots - my favorite standby in heavy winds!

Auntie: Just as well your Dad didn't get that M-B; you could hardly call a Mercedes Ziggy Stardust, could you?

dibnlib: Must be a relief to know that the neighbors are keeping an eye on your Mum. And good for you with the volunteering - teaching literacy skills is brilliant (and noble too!).

Gary: You and everyone in our neighborhood put up their lights in the last few days, which means I'll have to get busy.  I tend to put them up late, then leave them up until January 6 (the 12th day of Christmas). Most people here take them down around New Year's Eve.

OG: I've looked and looked for that pesky certificate; thing is, my husband is very bad with paper - it's piled up all over his office and a lot of stuff gets attached to other totally unrelated things. Things get even dodgier when he puts something somewhere "safe".....

AQ: "The Mum Thing" works well with daughter and grandkids, but not with hubby. He gets anxious when I approach his desk; he's afraid I'm going to tidy it up and do something stupid like file things alphabetically.  Oh dear about trash truck; hope not too much damage done.

Hallo everyone else. Love to read all your news. And Caerann: If you're back home; hope you had a good trip.
