Weekly Chat, Sunday November 15, 2009

Hallo folks. Not much action yesterday afternoon on last week's chat, though SueC quoted a poem by the Wolof fishermen of Senegal about ospreys, which I found reassuring.

  • Love pic of Dillon swimming!  And at Loch an Eilean too - he wouldn't have wanted to be in the water the one time I went there - I've never seen such high "waves" on inland water before!!!!  And freezing cold wind - I think it was in June 2006!!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Dibnlib, great photo of Dillion. He looks like he is having the time of his life:)

  • Afternoon all,

Dibnlib : Absolutely loved Dillon. I had a lab that used to love swimming. Could not get him out of the water sometimes. He just loved retrieving sticks that were thrown in.

Plumber arrived and said central heating pump was on the way out so we had it replaced. £150 was a bit of a rip off but what can you do when you are useless at DIY. I probably would have flooded the house.

This morning we went on a shopping mission to Sainsburys and picked up our 3D glasses.

Weather nice and sunny now after early rain.

    Temp 13.8c , Humidity 58% , Dew point 5.7c , Pressure 997hPa rising.

Thought you might like this photo of Brugmansia flowering in our conservatory now

  • Morning all: Weather sounds ghastly!  Interesting news on the Tracking Other UK Ospreys about a solo bird in the Amersham area.... Glad it's not one of ours.

AQ: Pretty little flowers; nice that some thrive (survive?) in extreme temps.

Lindybird: Wish I could help with the photo uploading dilemma. Is there any difference in the image sizes between the old and new cameras?  Also, Gary's tip might be helpful. Re turkey dinner, many stores here now do the turkey for you - cook it completely or half-cook it, then you finish. You pick it up Christmas Eve, along with the side dishes. Sounds awful, but I've done it twice and one time it was very good, the second time not so. Trouble is, not everyone likes the same side dishes  Still have to read all the instructions to all these appliances!

    Margobird: Vertical is good.

OG: We have Thanksgiving one month before Christmas, where turkey is the traditional meal (two in a month!), though lots of people opt for ham, etc., and many seem to go out for Txgiving dinner.  Not having grown up with Txgiving, I'm not that attached to it, though daughter and grandkids are.  And, of course, our Christmas lasts just one day - no Boxing Day - no week off between Xmas and New Yeear's. It's a very "rushed" holiday here.

George: Morning; too bad we can't get all these nifty programs.

dibnlib: Lovely Dillon again!  What a sweetie.  Like the idea of a frog with a hanky on his head - with knotted corners I hope!  Was looking through a catalog last night and saw a garden ornament created by a Utah artist that consisted of two metal "aliens" carrying off a very traditional garden gnome!  Also, in same catalog, saw a T-shirt that read "Dogs don't need 9 lives; they got it right the first time." Daughter is due here later with her huge softie of a dog who will romp around the garden and freak out our cat, which will hide under hubby's desk and scowl.

Alan: Brugmansia - Angel's Trumpet? - very exotic.  Good you've got heat again, but 3-D glasses? May I ask where you'll use them?  Thanks for the heads up on the new blog.

    Have a nice evening/morning all.

Alan:  Gorgeous!  (No, not you, though I'm sure you are a 'lovely man', I mean the photo!!)

Think you are probably right about the c.h. pump, don't expect they cost a lot for the parts, but suppose that's the going rate for labour these days when they have to dismantle something to install etc.. At least you're all set for the colder weather now, when it comes...bbrrrr.

george g;   I saw the programme on the clifftop birds, & I don't know enough about ident either, but it was very interesting, wasn't it?  The man involved was very dedicated & had studied them for years. Also I enjoyed the Autumnwatch prog. about the ospreys, wow, that was a treat, seeing them fishing etc., I videoed it all so I could study it again & look for telltale leg rings, but don't think any of them were 'our' birds, although of course one of them could have been Odin!  of even Garten!

Gary:   Thanks for offer of help with the photos, but I think (Annette I think it was) was right about it being too much information for the programme to upload from my computer file, as my new camera has a lot of pixels & also I have been taking the pics using the zoom mode, which seems to make it all worse! I'm not techy enough to know how to crop them or whatever, so will probably have to live with it!

dibnlib:    Nice photo of Dillon swimming, mine loves to swim, too.  Bore you all with pic of our 'Buzz' with his beloved Master, taken with old camera:

  • Annette : 3-D glasses are for the 3-D week of programmes on channel 4 and just in case Brains needs a spare pair.

    FAB

  • Alan, I need to ask, why the 3D glasses? Sorry about the pump but I would have to pay as well, I am hopeless!

Lindybird, lovely picture of Buzz . On the camera, there will be a setting where you can change the pizel number/size of the photo's that it takes. Could knock it down to 2-3 megabites and that sould work.

  • hi lindybird

doesn't he just look sooo comfy.  how could anyone mistreat him and yet he is so obviously completely confident and happy with you and of course his beloved master. very well done, cos i know you said it wasn't easy to start with, but you persevered and all of you have reaped the rewards
