Weekly Chat, Sunday November 8

Hi all. Just got this started before zipping off to bluegrass concert. Check out the previous blog for nifty photos of alpacas from OG and more!

  • Auntie – I Googled and found a site that played samples of "Cantus Arctica". Wow! It’s now on my Christmas list (if I don’t find it myself first !!!).

George G – We have speed humps and other devices which are collectively called "traffic calming devices". Huh, they may calm the traffic, but they don’t calm this driver.

Oh no, Margobird, not again. Please take care.

Well the heat wave continues. Now day 7. Slight relief next Monday when we expect a cooler 28 before it starts rising again <sigh> I think I would rather not know. Love the a/c in the archives - yesterday I actually had goose bumps. Both buses were not too late and both were fully air-conditioned the old fashioned way (ie none and all windows open !!!). I have covered my precious beans & lettuce with an array of old serviettes. Tomatoes are thriving in the heat and so are teeny bugs.

This morning Father Christmas came to Adelaide in the Christmas Pageant – 63 floats, 15 bands, 9 walking sets, 10 dance groups, 3 choirs. 2,500 performers take part including 265 clowns. The pageant spreads over 3 km and wends its way through Adelaide’s streets for ¾ hour. Floats include Xmas themes (stocking, tree), fairy tales (Cinderella, Puss in Boots), a nativity, London bus, modern themes (surfing, robots), pageant queen & king & attendants, ending up with FC himself on his sleigh with reindeer. He takes up residence in the Magic Cave in a city store. The pageant started in the depression days of 1933 with 8 floats and 3 bands. Originally sponsored by a now-lost department store, it continues with the support of credit unions. Up to 300,000 were expected to line the route despite the expected max of 39. At the start it was only 32 C. There have been plenty of warnings to take sunscreen, water & to cover up.

  • AQ, what a pageant! 3km long.

Seems strange to think of christmas and heat for me.

Have a great weekend and happy Saturday everyone

  • AQ: As Gary says, very odd to think of Santa in a heat wave. Does he wear a red suit and have a long beard? Must be hotter than blazes!

Gary: Best to fly straight there; it's a long enough flight anyway.

All contractors have now left the building!  Carpeting is installed and I'm back in "my" room, but oh, horrors, our furniture, which we knew was sort of old and tacky, now looks eons older and much tackier than I remember.  Hmmmm.

Hope the weather is kind to everyone, wherever you are. Take care all!

  • Gary It is said that our pageant is the biggest of its type in the world. Annette Yes, Father Christmas wears a red suit & hat and long beard. Suit is of lightweight material. He was well supplied with bottles of water (as were all the participants). One year when FC became unwell during the pageant, he was swopped for another - unbeknowns to the children somehow. It has just passed 39.5 C in Adelaide. Here nearer the beach we are a cooler 36.6 C !!!  And it is only 3.40 pm with the hottest part of the day still to come.

  • Lovely film, jsb, that man loved osprey didn't he?

A chilly 7 degrees here at the moment and rain all night arrived from the south. Hope you all down there are not drowned out, I see you have flood warnings.

  • Hello! It`s interesting to read how weather varies in different parts of this globe: heatwaves in Australia, flood warnings in Britain, here it has been a relatively cold night -10C. Now the temp has risen somewhere around  -5C, but the weather forecast says that it will be warmer next week, so it will probably be bye-bye to those snow patches.

TerryM, glad to hear that you like Sibelius! His music always brings pictures of our nature to my head.

Aguilareen, I get my goose pumps nowadays just going outside LOL

Alan, couldn't`t Brains help you out with that T-Bird problem?

    Annette, congrats for the carpeting

Hope you all have a nice Saturday where ever you are

  • stay as cool as you can AQ

Auntie, that is chilly, stay warm!

Annette, don't go there with the furniutre!! LOL Once you start..... Glad the carpeting is done.

Here we are wet and had rain in the night but not as bad as the UK

    Happy Saturday everyone.

  • Terry M

Here in N Ireland we had the rain last night but it'sbright and sunny now.  Glad we're missing the severe gales.

By the way, can someone please tell me how to post, other than as a reply to someone else?  I asked about it once before, then couldn't access the site for a while so may have missed a reply.  If so, Sorry!

    Patricia

  • Patriciat, that is how you post, just reply to any message.

Here in Cumbria we listen to the weather forecast and have to decide whether we are Northern Ireland and south west Scotland, or northern England. I think it's usually the wet one, although, like you, wet in the night but bright now.

  • Auntie : I was unable to ask Brains as he was on another mission. The good news is that the fault is a known one and subject to a Tbird recall so it wont cost TI anything.

Weather has been horrible again today, Strong winds and heavy showers. Forecast:
