Weekly Chat, Sunday November 8

Hi all. Just got this started before zipping off to bluegrass concert. Check out the previous blog for nifty photos of alpacas from OG and more!

  • hello everyone

i am a terror for pressing the wrong key and making everything disappear and it is always when i am near the end

thanks to everyone for their links

our neighbours son has just got back from afganistan. he was doing a very dangerous job. checking for ieds, he is a lovely young man. just 24 if we were relieved to see him, i can only imagine what alan and mhari felt like, their other son is also in the army so after he has done his training he expects to go to the war zone.alan and mhari must wonder what they have done to deserve this

i will lighten up now and tell you about my 4 legged thief. harvey only stole a peach and fresh fish that mum had bought down from scotland. we couldn't get decent fish in shawburyso it really was a blow. fingal didn't steal till we got dillon. we have the most marvelous belgian chocolate shop in town and now and then we treat ourselves - ok maybe a lot more often than that. they are kept in the dining room. they started to disappear so of course we presumed it was dillon until 1 day when i was in the living room and i could see fingal headfor the dining room. he definitely knew whwt he was doing  as he looked back over his shoulder to check he wasn. being clocked. i waited till he pushed the dining room door open, leaped to me feet and found him just starting to push the cupboard door open.one mintute later and all my delicious would have gone.cheeky monkey and he let us believe it was dillon.

someone mentioned youngsters of today respecting members of our armed forces but they doubted it. we had experience of this in windsor. a sentry outside the castle gate was being taunted by youths. a youg boy turned to his mum and asked why they were being nasty to him. her answer was perfect. she replied (oops sorry) "because he is very special indeed"

  • Oh dibnlib, dogs can be so like children sometimes, can't they? And how clever your Fingal is too, just like a jewel thief in the movies.

  • Caerann: Those bird greeting cards are brilliant! Where do you find all this stuff!   Off out now. Sunny and in low 70s (low 20s) here today.

  • Yes, thanks Caerann, had fun with the singing cards!

Bit grey here today, and damp.  Husband risked life & limb to climb up on conservatory roof with ladder, to brush down the dirty grimey bits. Then washed all over with hose. Watched from the garden hedge by most of our population of garden birds, no doubt wondering what he was up to!   As soon as he stopped for a coffee, they came swooping in for their treats from the feeders as usual.  (Dog just milled around, getting in the way as usual and not helping, but he likes to feel involved)

dibnlib:   Liked your dog story, they can look so innocent, but cannot really be trusted, can they!?  Also liked your sentry story, I think it is only an ignorant minority who do not value the right people.

OG:   Meant to say, loved your lilies picture, you did well with those. I managed to kill some off lately, so was disappointed when next to nothing came up in a big pot, it will teach me to take better care of them!

  • Annette : The white tailed eagle cam is the direct stream link and it is in colour with a split screen for 2 camera positions. If you look at the forum you will see some great still pictures. Some with a wonderful fox in them.

    FAB

  • Caerann, thanks for that link to the cards. Incredible. I'll be checking those out. Did you see the clips on the news/youtube about the woman soccer player roughing up her opposition! I know you are a soccer fan.

Dibnlib, what a great story and well done for catching the real one responsible! Poor Dillon:)

Lindybird, that sounds dangerous up on the roof! My neighbour is an ex fire chief and he is always telling me horror stories of people falling off ladders/roofs! I am petrified to go up one now.. Stay safe!

  • Good morning/evening, everybody!  Thought I'd better pop in and actually post, instead of just reading my emails.  Everything is fine here.  We're just busy - minor renovations, painting, deep cleaning in preparation for Christmas visitors,  mulching to try to keep our poor plants alive through a hot, dry summer, attending a round of summer/pre-Christmas events, etc, etc.

The hot weather continues, and NO RAIN, except along the north coast of New South Wales, where they had so much rain it was declared a natural disaster area.  We're expecting 38 degrees C. again today.

I WILL be stopping for 2 minutes today at 11.00 am.  We mark our rememberance day on the actual day still, although there are various church services etc through the entire week.  TV channels covering rememberance services also pause, but I was incensed last year when the channel cut in with commercials!!!  By the way, I still refer to the day as Armistace Day.

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Good morning to you, Wattle. Wondered where you had gone, so pleased you clocked in today!!!  Don't envy you the renovations - but at least you say they are minor ones, and it's always good when you finish.  Sorry about your poor plants needing extra TLC in the heat.  It went really cold here with a frost Monday, then today started warmer due to cloud, but feels very cold again this evening (Tuesday).  I didn't know you mark Remembrance/Armistice Day as well as Anzac Day - learning a lot from this site!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hey Gary, I'm glad you liked the bird cards; you as well Annette. Actually Gary I'm not a soccer fan per se but knowing there are fans here on the forum, I thought you or they would like to see how Chicago does the sport.   =O)

Had a tough day today dealing with my joblessness and the holidays coming up and all. Most days I cope pretty well but today was really difficult until I happened to look out in the late afternoon to see a beautiful male American Kestrel perched on a telephone pole in the alley behind my building. They had been regular visitors up until about a month ago so he was just the lift I needed. I stood out in 48f/8c temps for 90 minutes watching him with binoculars and taking photos. He's such a handsome lad:
