Ospreys on Autumnwatch

Looks like Simon King is going to be talking about/following Ospreys in Africa for the BBC Autumnwatch show on Friday 6th November.  He has posted comments on his Twitter page about it.

Work to live don't live to work

  • Thanks Debbie. I did comment on this on the chat page

  • Cheers Alan

Unfortunately I've not had the chance to keep up with the chat page recently.

  • Cool,  when is that on????  Saw him when we were on holiday in Shetland, just after seeing lots of puffins and the Shetland Wren. Would be great to see the Ospreys in Africa.  Sounds like a great idea for a Christmas holiday one year!!!!

  • Simon was in Senegal yesterday (2nd, on Twitter).....the BBC Autumnwatch site has a synopsis of Friday's Autumnwatch which says he will be in Scotland reporting on salmon? Presumably he is on his way back? The osprey search was maybe for another programme? BBC details are:-

    Next on:

Friday, 20:30 on BBC Two (except Northern Ireland (Analogue), Wales (Analogue))

    Synopsis

Chris and Kate are in the Lake District to witness a British wood at its seasonal best - a colourful and spectacular sight. The trees are host to red squirrels, jays and tawny owls - all very busy at this time of year.

Simon King is in Scotland to follow the fortunes of wild salmon - in autumn they face the daunting task of swimming many miles upriver to breed.

Gordon Buchanan is on the trail of another viewer's story, and Martin Hughes-Games demonstrates how to get more involved with the wildlife and the series.

    oooOOOooo

Maybe the salmon story is not 'live' ....like, already in the can...LOL ;-) Is this fish live? No it's a recording!

  • According to Radio Times online, Simon King's film on ospreys in Senegal is to be shown on Autumnwatch on Fri 13th Nov:

    Synopsis for Friday 13 November 8:30pm - 9:30pm BBC2

Chris Packham and Kate Humble are in Pembrokeshire, south Wales, to find out how our marine wildlife is faring this autumn. Seasonal storms stir up a rich mix in our seas and it's at the coast where you can witness the results, whether it's by looking in a rock pool or simply combing the beach. Simon King's in Senegal, west Africa, on the trail of arguably Britain's most spectacular summer visitor - the osprey.

  • Thanks, all of you Above:   Saw you had mentioned this on the main Osprey blog- thanks for the info, will be sure not to miss any of the episodes, you never know, we might, just might, catch a sight of one of 'our' girls, how wonderful would that be!  It's great that people like Simon King are keeping ospreys in general in the public eye, so that even folk who do not usually bother with our native/migratory birds are in the picture about the amazing journeys they take, and their fascinating lives.

  • This interview with Chris Packham is interesting too.

As we now have the synopses for programmes 6 and 7 (see above), this seems to contain hints about the possible content of Programme 8:

It's to Cairn Gorm he'll return with Autumnwatch for four days of filming, to be edited and broadcast in the same week.

It's not clear when this will be screened though - Fri 20th Nov is Children in Need night, so it may be put back to the 27th.

  • Sue C, thanks , you have certainly done a lot of research for us.

  • I have just sent this email to the 'admin' at Faune-Aquitaine. I think they helped us follow the ospreys in France with added interest, thanks to their enthusiasm and the wonderful photographs taken by Xalbai.

    Autumnwatch BBC2 Friday 13th November 2009.

    Hi Faune-Aquitaine members,

After the excitement we all had with the visits of Mallachie and Rothes, the Scottish Ospreys (Balbuzard Pecheur) from Loch Garten to your Region recently, I thought your members would like to know that the BBC will be showing a programme on BBC2 next Friday, 13th November at 8.30PM UK time (9.30PM for you), which will contain a report about ospreys. We have been told that Simon King, a wildlife expert, reporter and film-maker has been to West Africa and has this week been successful in finding a large number of ospreys in West Africa, probably in Senegal, since that is where I think he flew to from the UK. His report is due to be shown on this programme. BBC2 is available in France via the Astra 2 satellite, the details are as follows:-

The latest data on Google shows that Mallachie and Rothes are in Gambia and Guinea Bisseau respectively, but this information is due to be updated early next week. So I do not think they will be on the programme.
