NEWS FROM OTHER NESTS - 2012

Dunedin male:

  • It is so very sad to think so many of these magnificent birds have probably been lost...as well as at least 4 of the youngsters we knew from last year.  My thoughts are with all the ospreys, whereever they are but, especially, of course , the ones we know.

As most of the known nests are settled now and most have eggs, spare a thought for the ospreys who did not return this year, notably Green 7Y at LOTL, no ring at Bassenthwaite, AW at Rutland Water, the female at Threave and most of all both the ospreys at Wigtown Bay. It seems like more than 10% have been lost despite the upsurge in sightings this year.

Yes I have never known so many ospreys go down in one year. Do not write them all off until May 1st at least. Ospreys have been known to turn up as late as May 1st and beyond.

[/quote]Does it seem a large number because each year we are able to follow more & more nest sites, eg. would Rutland have announced yet that AW was missing had he not been tracked?

Certainly as a percentage I remember 2005 as being far worse. In 2004 11 returning trans-located Ospreys from Rutland summered in the UK (8 at Rutland & 3 elsewhere in the UK) in 2005 3 or 4 of these failed to return - 03(98), 10(00), 07(97) & (I think) 01(99). I know there were also a lot of Scottish birds missing that year although we didn't get  follow as many then.

Wonderful picture, and the sound is excellent too.

Do we know who the ospreys are?

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

  • Rach : I am still trying to find out. All I know is that both ospreys are ringed.

  • What a fabulous sight, Alan, and the sound is crystal clear, something to go there for even if the cam was down :-)  Thank you!

Just wondering if there light at night - shall have to remember to call in on them tonight :-)

  • Thanks Alan.

How quickly it gets dark there! That's a surprise.
