I wondered too if a predator had got into the tree out of sight of the camera. It seems very odd that the parents left the nest in bad weather for that length of time, and strange that the chicks were away from the nest cup, and near the edge of the nest.

Best year ever for Sanibel ospreys here

ALAN - Thanks for the Sanibel Island Sun. I spent May in Florida with 4 days watching the Ospreys Fledge on Sanibel island. Ding Darling Refuge had told me that it was one of the best seasons on record. Your attachment reports 125 noted fledges. Nest watchers watched 133 nests (78 which were occupied) and there were more according to Audubon/Ding Darling there are over 150 nests on an island a few miles long.

May I share some of them nests with you all that I watched and captured on Sanibel.

 

The latter was watching over his nest on power cables - most of the nests are man made on Sanibel to avoid them building on the power lines as the Island is saturated now. They have there ups and downs as mentioned in your post ALAN - 2007 not many fledge. The winter before this one was a big loss due to cold weather in FL and many adults and young starved as they could not catch fish (They generally do not migrate from here).

 

 

 

Thanks for the great pics Keith. I thought you would be interested in that report. We still have a long way to go in the UK to bring the numbers up to reasonable levels.

Apologies for the delay in blogging – a problem arose at our HQ.

Despite the atrocious weather, the adult Ospreys have been attentively caring for the youngsters, with the female mantling them to keep them dry whilst the male fed them.  There was an incident on Friday when the nest was invaded by a couple of magpie and one of the chicks ‘had a go!’. However, the male appeared very quickly and chased them off."
