Weekly Chat, Sunday October 25, 2009

Evening/Morning all: This week should bring more interesting news about Mallachie. Check the last few entries of the previous Weekly Chat for another photo of Queenie and other input from bloggers!

Hope you all got your clocks, microwaves, coffee pots, TVs, etc., organized for the next six months. And when did BST replace GMT, at least in the summer.  In the US, standard and daylight savings time have had a long and fascinating (and apparently often confusing) history, given that we have three times zones for the contiguous states.  DST is another matter, with most states changing but some not, but at least we don't have 30 minute increments like they do in Australia!

TerryM: The GE Help window is pretty clear re tours.  I do recall that it took several "clicks" to get the thing started. Other folks commented on that and I had the same experience in the beginning but then it was okay. I tried to copy and paste some of the info onto your page, but it included boxes with images and they didn't copy. I'm sure other folks will have more helpful info. Good luck.    Too bad lovely Queenie isn't around any more. When my daughter and I were away the other week, we stayed at a place which is a favorite "drop off" spot for folks wanting to "lose" cats. They had three cats when we were there, which hung around the garden entrance to the dining room waiting to be fed (by the staff). One night, the cats were served prime rib, all nicely chopped up for easy digestion!!!!

Alan: So. Are you treating us all to a trip to Loch Garten next year with your lottery winnings or will we be depending on the webcam again?  :-)

Gary:  Dying to hear about your English food outing (what was it really like?)

OG: We grow tomatoes outside here but my friends who do often fence them and other veggies in to keep various critters, including deer, from snacking on them; not to mention snails. My sister has expressed some frustration with EU rules - specifically not being able to buy French cheese off a market stall (I think that was it). Is following EU rules a bore or do you think it's generally for the good?

  • Afternoon everyone,

Margobird : I am sorry about all the bruising. I hope it will soon be better.

Lindybird : Great halloween story. Thanks for that.

We are prepared for Halloween on TI. Whether we have enough sweets etc is debateable. Some years we have lots of children coming round and other years not many. It is unpredictable.

Weather was dreadful last night and this morning. Lots of rain but still mild. Now dry and a little sunshine.

    Temp 16.2c . Wind WSW 8mph.

    Happy Halloween

  • Evening everyone!

Margobird, hope you get better soon. Someone should pamper you now.

Gary, than you for the Clover`s pic. Such a beauty and her pen looks so comfortable and roomy

Lindybird, absolutely great story! Give Buzz a Halloween hug from me

Caerann, I don`t get any trick or treaters here either. But the main reason is that here in Finland Halloween is still All Hallows Eve, in that meaning that we usually gather together with our dear and close ones, remember those who have passed away and go to cemeteries to lit candles. And because evenings are quite dark right now, those cemeteries look like sea of candles, absolutely beautiful.

    But Happy Halloween everyone!

  • Lots of penguins about but I can't get into the cranecam either. Just tried for the fourth time today and there is some chat going on - someone said "anyone know why we're not live?" and someone answered "I think they save the bandwidth for when they really want it - activities". So maybe there's not a problem with our computers after all!

Beautiful flowers everybody, hope they made all the poorly ones feel a bit brighter. And what a handsome Clover, Gary, looks a happy horse.

I think I would rather do Hallowe'en like auntie, we seem to be becoming Americanised (sorry those of you across there). Fortunately I live out of the town on a dark country lane so no visitors for me.

    Terry in Cumbria

  • nice to know about All Hallows Eve thank you for that auntie.  we used to call it guising (disguise). anyway i have just had my first trick or treaters and there are fireworks going off. luckily dillon is not too bothered though i do not think he would want to be outside. i think he will stay close to me while the bangs and whizzes are going off.

who is going to start a new thread off for annette. to keep continuity timewise, does it have to be someone across the pond? that is called "passing the buck" i think!!!!

  • That sounds a very nice thing to do Auntie:) Have a lovely evening.

Thanks Auntie and Terry for the comments about Clover. If there is a more pampered horse than her I would like to know about it!! LOL

  • Margobird, so sorry you are feeling so sore today.  I hope you're feeling better soon.  I've been looking through my flower pics to find just the right one to cheer you up, and came up with this one.  It's my very favourite wattle tree, which I grew from seed.  It's proper name is Acacia Elata, so I hope it does lift your spirits a little.

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Good morning/evening everybody.  It's getting on for 7.30 am on Nov 1 here, with a clear, sunny, still morning and 20 degrees at the moment.  Yesterday we reached 38 degrees, and expect the same for the next couple of days, after which we should get a southerly change and cooler temperatures.  There have been afternoon thunderstorms all around us for the last couple of days, but we havent had any rain here.  40 kilometres away in Young, they had 50 mls  and local flooding out of a storm the night before last.  Here, what remains of our ground cover crunches to dust under our feet now.  We are expecting a long, hot, hard summer.

We have no Halloween traditions in Australia, although the shops have, for the last few years, been full of 'trick or treat' type stuff.  Resistance to buying is high though, becasue we generally see it as just another commercial opportunity to grab our money.  While looking for Margobird's wattle pic, I found a suitable pic for you all though.  It's the scariest  (or most scared) orchid I've seen.  Enjoy Halloween, everybody!

    Smiles, Jan.

  • what  a lovely tree Wattle:) Thanks

Here is a link to a funny storey of a deer having a swim in a pool!

  • Good stuff, Gary!  Thanks for the link.

  • 9.00 am and the temp is up to 30 degrees - right on track for a hot day.  I've taken all my long curtains down for a well-deserved bath.  It's OK, that's only 3 windows we're talking about!  At the moment all the lace ones are having a gentle wash in the machine, hopefully to rid them all of that red dust we got a few weeks ago.  I'm groaning at the sight of all the cleaning I now have to do before my nice clean curtains go back up!  (windows, walls, venetians - and the ironing, so the windows might be bare for a few days if it gets too hot!

    Smiles, Jan.
