Weekly Chat, Sunday October 25, 2009

Evening/Morning all: This week should bring more interesting news about Mallachie. Check the last few entries of the previous Weekly Chat for another photo of Queenie and other input from bloggers!

Hope you all got your clocks, microwaves, coffee pots, TVs, etc., organized for the next six months. And when did BST replace GMT, at least in the summer.  In the US, standard and daylight savings time have had a long and fascinating (and apparently often confusing) history, given that we have three times zones for the contiguous states.  DST is another matter, with most states changing but some not, but at least we don't have 30 minute increments like they do in Australia!

TerryM: The GE Help window is pretty clear re tours.  I do recall that it took several "clicks" to get the thing started. Other folks commented on that and I had the same experience in the beginning but then it was okay. I tried to copy and paste some of the info onto your page, but it included boxes with images and they didn't copy. I'm sure other folks will have more helpful info. Good luck.    Too bad lovely Queenie isn't around any more. When my daughter and I were away the other week, we stayed at a place which is a favorite "drop off" spot for folks wanting to "lose" cats. They had three cats when we were there, which hung around the garden entrance to the dining room waiting to be fed (by the staff). One night, the cats were served prime rib, all nicely chopped up for easy digestion!!!!

Alan: So. Are you treating us all to a trip to Loch Garten next year with your lottery winnings or will we be depending on the webcam again?  :-)

Gary:  Dying to hear about your English food outing (what was it really like?)

OG: We grow tomatoes outside here but my friends who do often fence them and other veggies in to keep various critters, including deer, from snacking on them; not to mention snails. My sister has expressed some frustration with EU rules - specifically not being able to buy French cheese off a market stall (I think that was it). Is following EU rules a bore or do you think it's generally for the good?

  • Caerann thank you so much.  Feeling rather sorry for myself so this has cheered up.  I am as stiff as a board today didn't realise I had walloped myself in so many places.  Everyone of this forum has become a friend to me.

I have absolutely know need to dress up for Halloween, one look at my face and awful black eye says it all.

  • Hello Dianne I am pretty sure I have not cracked any ribs.  I am just so stiff today and have a really black eye now as the bruising has come out.  I can tell you I look a bit of a mess.  Have a good day.  Thanks for your concern.

    Margobird

  • dibnlib thanks I must say I feel very sorry for myself this morning.  Stiff all over and a very back black eye and bruising all down the right hand side of my face so if you saw me you would think I have dressed up for Halloween aleady.  Sorry you had an encounter with the bedside table and hope your bruises have healed.

    Margobird

  • DjoanS thanks so much.  Having switched on I am over the moon with all the flowers and the picture of Clover.  I am a real mess, dreadful black eye and bruised all down the righ side  of my face from my forehead to my chin.  Also bruising to my kness and ribs so do not feel too good.

    Margobird

  • Margobird - so sorry you are feeling rotten and sore today ... a good rest will do you good ... if you can get comfortable. It is the most beautiful, warm autumn day here ... calm before the storm forecast for tomorrow ...  I am going to enjoy doing some garden tidying now.

  • Margobird, sorry you are feeling even more stiff. That must have been one big whack you gave your self. Keep taking the pain pills. Love the pictures still coming in:)

AQ, thanks for the stats on the heat. I know what you mean about a dry heat but that is still hot!!!! In CT we get hummidity for july/aug and it makes a big difference. "Our" definition of a heatwave is 3 consecutive days of 90 (32) or above. If you used that criteria you would never emerge from a heatwave!! LOL

Will get my thinking cap on for names for "Skinky"

Hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday

  • That is a great picture of the flowers Caerann, are they yours?

How is the weather there today, stopped raining yet? Grey and gloomy here today but mild, up to 65/70 later!

  • Started out sunny here this morning, but now a bit of a grey cloudy day. Still warm, though for Oct.  Have put a pumpkin on the windowsill in case any 'littlies' come to call tonight for their Halloween  sweeties:  we only seem to get  a couple of groups of really young ones, thank goodness. Husband is looking forward to pumpkin pie later, not really part of our diet plans (sigh...).

Margobird:   Not surprised, really, that you say you are stiff as a board today, after giving yourself such a whack, on the patio.  As you can see, a lot of us are very concerned for you, so do spoil yourself a little and get better soon.

Alan, what lovely bluebells, you can't beat them for giving you a lift.  also, Caerann, such jolly flowers, great! Gary:  Clover looks like a real character, what a lovely photo, thanks for sharing. dibnlib, yes, our dog is called 'Buzz' for various reasons- he has busy bee stripes on his chest, and also is always rushing about, very busily being nosey about things. Also, Buzz Aldrin the astronaut came to mind when we first got the dog, don't know why really, but that's just me being illogical!

Saw our programme 'Autumnwatch' last night, very good although they do seem to try to cram too many different topics into it, like a lot of TV these days, its all at full pelt and nothing dwelt on in detail.  They showed an example of a new kind of 'picture' with raised detail - for use by the blind, to explain to them how birds gather in the sky & do that wonderful swooping and diving in a large group- what a good idea, I thought.

Here is a true Halloween tale, told to me by my father, who lived in a part of Liverpool called West Derby, which when he was a boy was on the fringes of the countryside (not now, all built up and absorbed by the city)

It took place when he was about 10 years old, and he was returning home at dusk along a long winding lane with open fields on one side, and a high stone wall on the other.  He decided to walk alongside the wall as it felt a little safer, and after a little while, found he could hear a noise of chains being dragged behind something - but he could see nothing, anywhere!!   When he stopped, the noise stopped, and when he walked a bit faster, the noise came faster and faster behind him. Trying not to panic, he almost ran to the end of the lane- the jangling noise was still following him, nothing was to be seen, his breath was coming faster and faster - and then, a huge head came over the wall, lunging at him!!  It was a horse! It had been following him parallel, on the other side, with its harness jangling louder and louder as it tried to keep up!! He was of course very relieved and told no-one about this for a long time, as he felt a bit silly, he said.

    Happy Halloween, Everyone!

  • Great Halloween storey Lindybird, thanks. That would have spooked me as well!!

Hope you get to give away some of the sweets tonight or they will have to be eaten along with the pumpkin pie:)

We don't get many, if any, trick or treaters as we are off the road a bit but have a small supply just in case. I also happened to buy just what I like as well.......................

  • Good Day/Morning Everyone:

We actually have a bit of sunshine today after nearly 2 inches of rain Thursday night in to Friday afternoon. Temps have dropped off though from middle 60s to upper 40s but at least all the wet won't freeze.

The sunflowers I grew in 2008 are what I posted, so glad you enjoyed them. I had one tall and four dwarf sunflower plants this year and the tall flowers lived for 2 weeks and then either died or were eaten by squirrels. We had a bad year for gardening, both flowers and vegetables though I only work with flowers and decorative plants.

Cirrus: I can't get on the Crane cam, been trying the past 2 days but am keeping up with the journal. The weather in Wisconsin has been  pretty similar to Chicago and I see they expect the birds to be grounded until Tuesday perhaps.

Hope everyone is enjoying Halloween. We don't get any trick or treaters, Gary, as we live in a condo building and the kids have never come by in the 10 years I've lived here. (No kids in the building either.)
