Evening/Morning all: This week should bring more interesting news about Mallachie. Check the last few entries of the previous Weekly Chat for another photo of Queenie and other input from bloggers!
Hope you all got your clocks, microwaves, coffee pots, TVs, etc., organized for the next six months. And when did BST replace GMT, at least in the summer. In the US, standard and daylight savings time have had a long and fascinating (and apparently often confusing) history, given that we have three times zones for the contiguous states. DST is another matter, with most states changing but some not, but at least we don't have 30 minute increments like they do in Australia!
TerryM: The GE Help window is pretty clear re tours. I do recall that it took several "clicks" to get the thing started. Other folks commented on that and I had the same experience in the beginning but then it was okay. I tried to copy and paste some of the info onto your page, but it included boxes with images and they didn't copy. I'm sure other folks will have more helpful info. Good luck. Too bad lovely Queenie isn't around any more. When my daughter and I were away the other week, we stayed at a place which is a favorite "drop off" spot for folks wanting to "lose" cats. They had three cats when we were there, which hung around the garden entrance to the dining room waiting to be fed (by the staff). One night, the cats were served prime rib, all nicely chopped up for easy digestion!!!!
Alan: So. Are you treating us all to a trip to Loch Garten next year with your lottery winnings or will we be depending on the webcam again? :-)
Gary: Dying to hear about your English food outing (what was it really like?)
OG: We grow tomatoes outside here but my friends who do often fence them and other veggies in to keep various critters, including deer, from snacking on them; not to mention snails. My sister has expressed some frustration with EU rules - specifically not being able to buy French cheese off a market stall (I think that was it). Is following EU rules a bore or do you think it's generally for the good?
are you feeling any better Margobird? (before the brandy!! LOL)
DjoanS I did fall asleep this afternoon for a couple of hours. The cough does not see so bad now either so perhaps my aching back will feel better tomorrow.
Margobird
Annette had a good sleep for a couple of hours this afternoon and feel a but more human now. The cough seems to have eased so I am hoping I won't need the doctor.
Gary thanks I had a couple of hours sleep this afternoon and the coughing has eased. Just going to do some brandy, honey and lemon (probably more brandy thant honey and lemon).
Hot night, hard to sleep, finally gave up. It is quite pleasant outside now (at 6.40 am) but another 33 C day to come. And it is not even summer yet !!!!! I've tried to spot the skink but only seen his tail once more. It must hear me coming. Himself reckons she is a female (something about its markings). Margobird - sorry to hear you are still poorly. I hope you get some sleep tonight.
dibnlib: Have you ever gone to work with different shoes? I did that once - was trying to figure out which to wear, the phone rang, I talked, hung up, grabbed my bag and rushed out the door. Didn't notice until I got all the way to work! One was dark blue, the other was black. Oh dear. I've also gone out with just one earring - heaven knows what "statement" I inadvertently made. I've never heard of A A Gill, but count me in on whatever you have planned.
OG: Sounds like you and dibnlib had nice days. Too bad about the soup.
Gary: When Herzog's movie Grizzly Man was released, the general feeling (from what I gathered) among wildlife professionals was that he'd been foolhardy and misguided at best. His former colleague has the tape and let Herzog listen to it, but she doesn't plan to listen to it or ever release it. I didn't see the documentary of them looking for him; I'll see if I can track it down. Did see the documentary (but not Sean Penn's recent film) of Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer's book about the young midwestern (?) kid who took off on an Alaska adventure and ended up being trapped by rising waters and subsequently died in that old abandoned school bus. And if anyone hasn't read Into Thin Air by the same author, it's a first-hand account of the October 1996 Everest expeditions that were hit by a "rogue" storm that killed several of the world's top climbers, along with their clients. Riveting reading, even when you know the outcome.
Margobird: Good that you're feeling better. My Mum used to give us "medicinal" doses of whiskey, etc., when we were sick. She'd probably be thrown in jail now for child endangerment or something...
AQ: No a/c at your house? We don't have it because we're so close to the ocean. Maybe time to get out the fans?
hi aq
loved the skink story, thank you. had to google it to find out more as they are not too common in scotland. OK we don't have them at all more,s the pity
That sounds HOT AQ, very difficult to sleep. Sorry about that. Is it due to cool off soon.
Annette, I haven't seen "Into the wild" but will look out for it. However I have read "Into thing Air" What an incredible storey. It seemed a miracle anyone survived. I love watching those sorts of things as well and marvel at how people go on when it is so hard.
hi annette
A A Gill is a newspaper columnist and writer. he wrote about his horrific behaviour and seemed very pleased with himself. the response i heard on jeremy vine (a radio 2 lunchtime topical programme )all echoed my own thoughts i am pleased to say.
off to bed now, i have spent the last couple of hours learning the words to some of the songs from "titanic" so i am taking the paper up to bed to read
see you tomorrow
Gary It isn't really hot yet (wait til it goes over 40 C), but I can't take the heat. Forecasters reckon 33 tomorrow, 36 on Sunday, 28 Mon and, joy oh joy, 20 on Tues. After a few days the house heats up so much and doesn't cool down overnight <sigh>
Annette We do have a/c but not at the sleeping end of the house, only in the living room. Anyway if everyone runs their a/c, we are likely to have a power failure. . .
