Weekly Chat, Sunday October 25, 2009

Evening/Morning all: This week should bring more interesting news about Mallachie. Check the last few entries of the previous Weekly Chat for another photo of Queenie and other input from bloggers!

Hope you all got your clocks, microwaves, coffee pots, TVs, etc., organized for the next six months. And when did BST replace GMT, at least in the summer.  In the US, standard and daylight savings time have had a long and fascinating (and apparently often confusing) history, given that we have three times zones for the contiguous states.  DST is another matter, with most states changing but some not, but at least we don't have 30 minute increments like they do in Australia!

TerryM: The GE Help window is pretty clear re tours.  I do recall that it took several "clicks" to get the thing started. Other folks commented on that and I had the same experience in the beginning but then it was okay. I tried to copy and paste some of the info onto your page, but it included boxes with images and they didn't copy. I'm sure other folks will have more helpful info. Good luck.    Too bad lovely Queenie isn't around any more. When my daughter and I were away the other week, we stayed at a place which is a favorite "drop off" spot for folks wanting to "lose" cats. They had three cats when we were there, which hung around the garden entrance to the dining room waiting to be fed (by the staff). One night, the cats were served prime rib, all nicely chopped up for easy digestion!!!!

Alan: So. Are you treating us all to a trip to Loch Garten next year with your lottery winnings or will we be depending on the webcam again?  :-)

Gary:  Dying to hear about your English food outing (what was it really like?)

OG: We grow tomatoes outside here but my friends who do often fence them and other veggies in to keep various critters, including deer, from snacking on them; not to mention snails. My sister has expressed some frustration with EU rules - specifically not being able to buy French cheese off a market stall (I think that was it). Is following EU rules a bore or do you think it's generally for the good?

  • I see, Annette. I'd overlooked the person standing waaaayyy out on that skinny looking branch. You couldn't pay me to do that!    =O)

  • AQ: look after your skink!  I too hope it doesn't eat your veggies.  If it grows to 60 cm, that's quite some lizard to meet in the compost!

Lovely morning here, so we are preparing to go watch geese down on the merse.  This is also an excuse to have lunch out with our daughter!  They do very good soup at WWT Caerlaverock (perhaps this is where it wins over RSPB Mersehead - sorry!).

Had interesting breakfast entertainment: blue tit, great tits, pied wagtail, wren, blackbird, four dunnocks and the usual sparrows, starlings, woodpigeon and of course goldfinches, all in the space of two slices of toast, a banana and a cup of coffee!

Have a good day, everybody.  Hopefully have geese photos this evening, but can't promise!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Morning all. Temp just over zero C, slightly windy but SUNNY! Thanks for the sunshine Aquilareen, you are such a talented girl! `Cause it has been a really gray week before today.

OG: happy geese hunting (with the camera, not shotguns)

  • Morning everyone,

I hope everyone who has been ill are feeling better today.

Lindybird : I watched the program on black bears last night. It was really interesting and the relationship the guy had with June was amazing. The only bit I did not like was the hunting and the fact that despite being told not to shoot the tagged bears one was killed. It is pathetic that people would want to kill such beautiful animals. I could go on all day about hunting. Did you see the osprey during the program?

Weather is cloudy here on TI at the moment. A little cooler today. Temp 11.7c with highs of 16 to 18 expected later.

I am off to hunt for food at Tescos armed with 2 reusable carrier bags.

  • Morning all ... hope everyone is recovered from their various illnesses! A beautiful morning here in Northumberland too ... off to Hauxley Nature Reserve shortly ... hope to see geese, herons and anything else that may be around.

  • Morning Alan I have recorded the programme about bears and thanks for warning me about the tagged bear that has been shot.  I too am opposed to hunting but is hard to know how to stop it.  How anyone could shoot one of these beautiful creatures is beyond me.

    Enjoy your Tesco shop.

  • aquilareen thanks very much.  Unfortunately I feel even worse today having had very little sleep last night. I am a right old rat bag when I suffer from sleep deprivation.    Some sunshine would be nice it is very gloomy again today.

  • Lindybird thanks for the link.  What magnificent creatures they are and wonderful that they have learned to trust man.  Love the bit where June stands up on her hind legs and has a good old scratch of the tree trunk.

  • Thanks Annette have been drinking honey and lemon all day and it does ease things a bit.  I will need another holiday at Denbury now.

  • Hi. Margobird!  Sorry to hear you had such a bad night- you must try & catch up on your sleep later today, & treat yourself to a little snooze- the bears do it! & so do lions (when they have full tummies, that is!). Have your hanky ready if you watch the bears programme, the baby cubs are sooo cute, and the grown ups rub their backs against the trees just like Baloo the bear in 'Jungle Book!'   (love that film, I am a softie..) Sadly as Alan says, there is a bit towards the end about the hunters which is so sad; I'll never understand these people and what they get out if it.
