Weekly Chat, Sunday October 25, 2009

Evening/Morning all: This week should bring more interesting news about Mallachie. Check the last few entries of the previous Weekly Chat for another photo of Queenie and other input from bloggers!

Hope you all got your clocks, microwaves, coffee pots, TVs, etc., organized for the next six months. And when did BST replace GMT, at least in the summer.  In the US, standard and daylight savings time have had a long and fascinating (and apparently often confusing) history, given that we have three times zones for the contiguous states.  DST is another matter, with most states changing but some not, but at least we don't have 30 minute increments like they do in Australia!

TerryM: The GE Help window is pretty clear re tours.  I do recall that it took several "clicks" to get the thing started. Other folks commented on that and I had the same experience in the beginning but then it was okay. I tried to copy and paste some of the info onto your page, but it included boxes with images and they didn't copy. I'm sure other folks will have more helpful info. Good luck.    Too bad lovely Queenie isn't around any more. When my daughter and I were away the other week, we stayed at a place which is a favorite "drop off" spot for folks wanting to "lose" cats. They had three cats when we were there, which hung around the garden entrance to the dining room waiting to be fed (by the staff). One night, the cats were served prime rib, all nicely chopped up for easy digestion!!!!

Alan: So. Are you treating us all to a trip to Loch Garten next year with your lottery winnings or will we be depending on the webcam again?  :-)

Gary:  Dying to hear about your English food outing (what was it really like?)

OG: We grow tomatoes outside here but my friends who do often fence them and other veggies in to keep various critters, including deer, from snacking on them; not to mention snails. My sister has expressed some frustration with EU rules - specifically not being able to buy French cheese off a market stall (I think that was it). Is following EU rules a bore or do you think it's generally for the good?

  • hi gary

actually dave is probably a rarity in that whatever he does, he does thoroughly. he will read instructions cover to cover and know exactly what is what, although even he can't sort out our present problem. we changed our car recently for a 15 month volvo. it had only one key and the garage said they would get another, the car is in the garage at the moment but they are having software problems which means they cannot programme the key at the moment. and of course "sods law" says that if you only have one key that is when you are most likely to lose it!!!!

  • hello again

have seen the red arrows display many times and never tire of them. being ex RAF we have also known some of the pilots (la creme de la creme as miss jean brodie would say!!!!!)

  • Morning all. First off, must apologize, my posts are always so long but I have to catch up with everyone who's been posting while I've been snoozing. It's almost time for an update on the girls; I'm sure Alan will alert us as soon as Alice puts it on the site.

OG. Garrison Keillor was very good - funny and sweet as usual. He did an hour-and-a-half show with no break; talked the whole time, returning to stories about his aunt who had tomatoes growing on her farm; he was wondering why heirloom tomatoes, with all their breeding, didn't taste as good as her plain old garden variety. A very pleasant evening.

dibnlib: My friend's husband rewrites all the instructions for their appliances, electronic gizmos, etc.  What I can't understand is why I have thick booklets with the instructions in three languages (English, French, and Spanish).  Then there are pages of dire warnings along the lines of  "Burns can result from touching hot surfaces"  Really?   And "Looington?" Well, enough said about that!  Glad you enjoyed your evening. My Mom was from Cork and used to tell us terrible tales of the "troubles" and not being allowed to speak Gaelic (she did teach us all the naughty words, which I've since passed on to my grandchildren - isn't that what grandparents are for?), but it is being taught and spoken again in Ireland, right?

Margobird: Happy to hear you enoyed  Denbury Farm .  Take care. My sister advocates honey for bad throats.

Alan: Short Wood sounded lovely - and looks even lovelier. You can almost smell the earth.  Sounds like a very rewarding and peaceful day. What is SSSI? Is there SSS2, etc?

Cirrus:  Enjoy the heating - and your new TV; sounds like a good deal!  We only watch CNN when there's a calamity somewhere.  As Gary reports, our media are completely obsessed with piggy flu.

Does anyone else try to place phone calls on their TV remotes? Or wave the phone at the telly and wonder why the channel doesn't change? The other day I went out to the car and pressed the "unlock" button on the car key as I approached the back gate and was surprised the gate didn't magically spring open...

Caerann: That 5-page gatefold in the National Geo was amazing (I'm also wondering how much it cost them, purely from a magazine production angle!). Did you manage to count all the folks up that tree? Thanks for the link. Also, I've "lost" the crane link that Cirrus mentioned. Could you possibly re-post it?

Must get organized. Back later to catch up. Have a nice evening folks.

  • Hi Annette!!! I know exactly what you mean by "using the wrong tool" the other day at work I tried to speak to the stapler when the phone rang... (couldn't`t resist bold, italic and exclamation marks, sorry...)

  • Hey Auntie: Just don't press anything while you've got that stapler up to your ear!

  • Caerann - what CAN one say ?!!  Just Wow!! I shed a tear about the Redwood and felt really young.

And smiled a really broad smile about the Owl.

Gotta get ready for work now - so looking forward to a Mallachie update.

  • Annette : SSSI = Site of Special Scientific Interest.

    FAB

  • Dibnlib: Mine reads everything - to the extent that he reads every poster, notice, advert etc etc when we are out.  Many an hour spent waiting with the kids while "Daddy read the notices" in museums etc!

Have just discovered: floor man IS tiling man - that's why he'll be here tomorrow!!  Having tanked the shower area and laid the wired mat thingy for the underfloor heating, he's finishing off the screed on the floor tonight and starting tiling tomorrow!!  Yippee! will start to see what it will look like ... oh! ...will I like it??!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
