Daily Update (LG Nest) Friday, 19th August 2011

Another daily thread and one wonders how many more there will be of them this year?

Lots of questions but not too many answers.

Tore, as far as we know, has not been seen since around 10am Thursday. Is she winging her way south? We eagerly await her satellite data.

Odin seems to be missing in action too. Has he decided to leave for Africa?

That leave Bynack and EJ left and not a lot of them has been seen yesterday either.

The nest looks very empty and wet tonight.

  • Cirrus to refresh GE, right click on the line which says Loch Garten Ospreys in the Places column, and a refresh option comes up in a command box. Click on refresh and away it goes and gets any new data. Hope this helps.

Well, I can help you there. Or rather the RSPB can.

Have you visited the RSPB page about how to set about getting the Osps into GE??

No, I don't think so.  So that's where I should begin then, is it?

  • ALICAT - that's horrendous - only just caught your post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Google Earth

To follow the ospreys on your computer you can use Google Earth - a free piece of software that simulates our planet with satellite photography.

    Downloading Google Earth for free

Google Earth is available free from the Google website: http://www.google.com/earth

Adding the osprey data to your Google Earth software

It's easy to add the osprey satellite data to your copy of Google Earth - just follow the steps below:

    1. Download and install Google Earth (if you haven't already)
    2. Launch the Google Earth software
    3. Go to the Add menu and click Network Link...
    4. Enter Loch Garten Ospreys in the Name field
    5. Paste the following address into the Link field

    http://www.rspb.org.uk/kml/lochgartenospreys.kml

Click OK to add the Loch Garten Ospreys data to the Places list on the left hand side of the screen.

Using Google Earth to keep an eye on the ospreys

Once the ospreys are in your list of Places you can double click them to zoom straight to their location. You can also use the standard Google Earth controls to zoom and pan around the globe.

Choosing how often to update Google Earth

The satellite data will be updated approximately once per day. To make sure you have the latest updates, you can tell Google Earth how often to refresh its data. To do this, right click on the Loch Garten Ospreys item in your Places list and choose Properties. Go to the Refresh tab and change the options so that it updates Periodically every 12 hours.

  • Thanks from me too, AG :-)  What I did was untick the main LG Ospreys tick-box and then go down and tick Tore's times and spots (can't even remember for 2 seconds what they're called :o ).

I don't know if we can be much help to the other osprey group, not having tried anything with HD.  I know that YT can accept HD... ::)

HERE ARE THE LAST KNOWN OSPREY SOUNDS TODAY, as indicated by MOFFER and PAM at about 1520hr.  There are 2 little bursts.

  • Well, SCYLLA - those calls are definitely Osps!  I did enjoy hearing them

  • Thank you very much, Cirrus.  At the mo I am installing Google Earth!

    Then I'll follow your instructions.

BTW I never got round to completing the info I was putting on here about preening.

Do you want to be one of my "Friends" and email me and I'll email you the info?

Let me know what to do about that too!!!!!!
