Weekly Chat, Sunday September 27, 2009

Hi All:

jsb: At the end of the previous Weekly Chat are two responses to your posting about the birds with French accents. One is from me and not especially profound. The other is from Diane, and reads as follows : Lovely article. I always have two pairs of house wrens (known as jenny wrens here) who return about the same time in the spring. Even though both females are house wrens, I can always tell which bird is singing, no matter where they are. I don't know whether the slight difference is because they winter in different regions or because individual wrens have distinct sounds. I always put up houses for them, but, this year, one pair decided that it would be more fun to nest in the nook above my propane gas tank, where the dials and controls are. So I had to fiercely guard the nest from the gas company employees who periodically check the gas levels. The gas company guys think I'm looney but they didn't dare to defy me and bother the wrens!

Everyone: AQ posted this one: Adelaide 10.50 am 12 C. Pumpkin soup for lunch thanks to friend giving me 2 large butternuts. Today is the Bay to Birdwood Classic for cars 1956-1977. Once upon a time they left from Glenelg (the Bay), but lack of space means they now leave from West Beach (2 km north). They travel about 70 km (44 miles) to Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills where there is a Motor Museum. Next year is the run for the Vintage cars (pre-1956).  A picnic day. A bit chilly today but not as chilly as Wattle's.

And Teresa had this tip: If you delete something by mistake it is worth holding the Ctrl key down and clicking on Z.   In lots of instances it undoes your last action - not always though but still worth a try.

AQ and Teresa: Hope it was okay to copy and paste your comments on this page - didn't want anyone to miss them.

Just saw white tailed eagle in webcam here. What a glorious bird! (put some pics to mypage)

Just looked at your sea eagles.  They are mighty birds right enough.  Beautiful pics.  Thank you xx

Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence.

  • Cirrus: No, my GE still shows Rothes at the sturgeon farm....

  • Adelaide 1 pm, fine sunny day 14 C, expecting max 17. Had eyes tested this morn. Yep, still have two. Memo: Do not go food shopping 11 am in school holidays.

Annette. I have posted a list of books on your page. I must think of some about SA. The only one I read recently was fiction. Written while the author was living in the farmhouse where I grew up, it was amusing to read the local scenes he included. Alas, it was his first novel and he included everything he ever thought of, too busy, too many characters, too many flashbacks.

  • Hey AQ. I got the list. So many suggestions. Thank you. I do appreciate it.  I read a book (autobiography I think) written by a woman who grew up on a farm maybe a couple of hundred miles from Sydney. My sister in the UK gave it to me to read when I was visiting. Can't remember the author or the title, but did enjoy it!

I went food shopping last Monday and found the store jammed with young people. Had forgotten it was the week before classes were due to begin at the Univ. of Calif at Santa Barbara and all the kids were stocking up.  Two eyes is/are good!  :-)

  • Happy Sunday/Monday All!

Annette and Diane: Did either of you have a chance to watch the Ken Burns film on the National Parks? Tres interesting (I'm a total history nerd) and such beautiful scenery! I know Gary said he would tape it but I hope you share it with you mum too, Gary.    =O)

Auntie: I take your saying we look perhaps like cousins as a compliment.  Thank you.  =O)  Actually in my family I am second generation born in U.S. of Swedish and Dutch ancestry on my father's side and second or third generation born in U.S. of Irish descent on my mother's side. As a teen I worked with a man who called me "the little dutch girl" but I've always been told I look just like my mom and I do for sure.

Diane: I've seen the Indy Peregrines are home a bit here and there. Do you also post on that website as well or is that a different "Diane?"

  • Caerann: I have the Ken Burns special on as I type. We're just over one hour into it - Looks like they're repeating it immediately afterward.

  • P.S. Ciarann: This is the kind of program where I wish we had one of those huge flat-screen HDTVs. It's on the list, but haven't got to it yet.

It is a very interesting program to be sure! I am familiar with John Muir but this film makes me want to read the works he published and also a biography about him. Talk about an environmentalist and that was back in the 1800s!

  • To Everyone since we're all bird lovers:

I was able to find this beautiful film about the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Texas on YouTube. I'm not sure if anyone had posted this in the past but it's a 5:33 look at these wonderful people who take in birds and either rehabilitate and release them, or keep the birds that can't live on their own.

Warning: When she removes the Barn Owls from their cages they screech very loudly so please watch your volume level.  =O)

This is how I wish everyone in the world could be. Please enjoy:

  • Hi, all. We are still having thunderstorms here and now 45-50 mph wind gusts. I will not need the leaf blower, but I may need that brush cutter that Gary mentioned if my tree limbs start falling!

I just watched the Ken Burns national parks program. Wonderful! Loved the scenery. Particularly liked the interesting story of John Muir's life. I took it as a stark reminder that people must follow their own path and do what they are meant to do in life, or their souls and their bodies will whither.

Hey, Annette, buy me one of those huge HDTVs, too, please. Ha! I'm glad you still have 2 eyes, aquilareen. I only get my eyes tested when I fail my driver's license eye test. LOL

Caerann: I'm not the Diane on the Indy Peregrine website. I have only posted on that site once. One of the women needed help identifying a local owl, who was calling at an odd time of day. I told her it was a great horned owl and assured her that mine call at those weird hours, too. I do love to see the falcons when they are home. Kinney is such a handsome fella, and he spends a lot of time on the ledge.

jsb: Good of you to visit the woman in the nursing home!
