Back from laundromat and Costco - where they have Christmas stuff already. Aaaack!
Alan: Thanks times two for the blog/nothing new post, so didn't have to rush to other page.
Gary: Re leafblowers, noise pollution seems to be a top reason to ban them, with pollution, especially from two-stroke gas engines (as opposed to four-stroke engines) up there too. In California, 20 communities have banned them in a patchwork quilt of ordinances, with the offending machines restricted sometimes just in residential neighborhoods. (Of course, given my previous comment, you could probably shoot someone using an illegal two-stroke with your entirely legal handgun and claim temporary insanity.)
Lindybird: Hope hubby is over sulk; doesn't sound good for Grumpy Neighbor though - must be like living next to a black cloud.
thanks jsb:) very interesting and I love reading about planes!
Thanks Annette. There would be riot here if you banded all the two stroke engines!! Leaf blowers are particularly noisey I have to say. Perhaps it should be in the Constitution about garden equipement, the same as it is for guns LOL
Gary: You mean the right of a well-regulated gardening crew to keep and bear leafblowers? There's got to be some special interest group out there that could spin it into a major story for the evening news...
LOL Annette and very clever use of the phrase. I can see the editor come out in you there LOL
Sign me up for that group and we can take our leaf blowers to Washington and "do" the Mall!
Adelaide Tues 7.25 am. Spring - a cool calm day – so far. Yesterday started the same but by noon we had thunder & lightning and rain and more rain. I thought it wiser to shut down computer. Later we had a brief power failure, just long enough to set appliances calling anguished shrieks and beeps, and requiring clock to be reset. An inch of rain fell in the afternoon in the city. Farmers welcomed the rain for their crops but not the strong winds & hail (golf-ball-sized). The Other Half lost his evening movie as one TV channel had transmitter problems. Ah, so much better to read a book.
Why can’t these people with noisy lawn/leaf/garden equipment synchronize? Why do they wait until another is finished before they start?
Annette, Gary, jsb -- Re the earlier discussion on this thread -- As of reports in June, 2009, the BBC is in serious negotiation with Google to launch an international/global version of the BBC iPlayer (via YouTube technology). You guys probably already knew this, but I just ran across the article. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/digital-media/5406851/BBC-and-Google-in-talks-to-launch-international-iPlayer-site.html
Diane: Didn't know that about Google/BBC talks; will keep an eye out for updates but will probably have to wait for "iPlayer for Dummies" to tell me how to use it.
AQ: Hope extreme weather doesn't damage crops beyond salvage. Re those noisy garden crews, it's a conspiracy, or so Oliver Stone told me.
Have to go out tonight; slept fitfully last night due to granddaughter's pre-dawn departure and drive through LA, thick fog, etc., en route to Arizona, but she's safely there now. Would rather stay home and catch up on zzzzzss.
good point about the leaf blowers AQ:) Your weather goes from one extreme to another. Not so good for the farmers
Thanks for that info Diana. I didn;t know that. Will have a read tomorrow. Be great to be able to access some BBC stuff. Catch everyone tomorrow
Hi, all. Happy Autumn Equinox!!! First day of fall. May you find peace in your lives at this time when day and night are in balance. And Happy Spring Equinox to aquilareen, Wattle, and folks in the other hemisphere.
aquilareen: Golf-ball-sized hail does not sound like fun. Weather folk are predicting storms and rain for us over the next couple of days. We need the rain right now, but I certainly don't want any golf balls falling out of the sky on this old roof. Hope the crop loss doesn't cause food shortages.
Annette and Gary: Very, very funny analysis of the politics of leaf blowers in America.
Also, Annette, please confirm that you are in contact with Oliver Stone. Would love to ask him about several conspiracy theories, especially UFOs. What are those things? I saw one once. Triangular shaped. Others saw it, too. Really.
Get some good sleep, Annette.
