I offered yesterday to start a new Topic once Bynack had fledged, but as we now have the updated Satellite Tracking page, and biography pages for Tore and Bynack, and there are some tracking results for Tore on Google Earth, I’ve gone ahead with it.
A brief introduction to the ospreys we’re tracking – first, the class of 2011.
Tore – link to her Biography
Tore is the elder of this year’s juveniles, her ring is blue/white 48. She fledged on Tuesday 12th July aged 54 days, and has started to do a little exploring.
Bynack – link to his Biography
Tore’s younger brother, ring blue/white 47. Bynack is aged 53 days today and has yet to fledge.
Edit: He has fledged, at 10.18 am today 16/7.
Rothes – link to her Biography
Rothes is the eldest of EJ and Odin’s offspring, hatched at Loch Garten in 2009. Her ring is white/black PJ. She migrated as a juvenile to Guinea-Bissau, and spent her formative months on the small island of Unhocomozinho, in the Bijagos Archipelago. Now a sub-adult, she has travelled north to Europe for the first time this summer and is currently in the Gironde estuary in SW France, where she also spent 6 weeks on her way south in 2009. So far, she has not returned to the UK.
Rothes' earlier travels were followed in this thread, now closed.
Barbara : You are probably right as there are so many young ospreys with blue leg rings and transmitters in the area now. LOL
Great to see the updates, thank you ALAN, and thanks for the maps, MOFFER :-) So far, so good, and may our dear birds continue to flourish.
IMAGICAT
I wonder if the adults partnership carries on in the winter. And where do the adults first form a partnership? If its abroad, and they set off back here at different times, how do they find each other for the initial season? I dont know if there are a breeding pair both tagged, I suppose these questions could be partly answered if there were. So many fascinating things we dont know.
I think they initially meet in their breeding area near nest location. Their bond is formed once female has accepted food from male. However if females mate is late returning in subsequent years she may begin to bond with another male. This relationship may continue but generally if original male does return then he will try to chase off any interlopers. There are many scenarios but this is usually what happens. They do not spend time together in their winter areas & migrate separately.
Hope this helps

Interesting Tallisman (male) who was tagged had two tagged mates Logie then Morven after Logie failed to return.
Tallisman wintered in the Bijagos Archipelago off Guinea Bissau on an un named island. His mate Logie wintered in the Bijagos Archipelago approx 49 kms away on Ilha Roxa. His second mate Morven is far away on the coast of Mauritanea.
Tallisman failed to return this year.
Roy commented during one blog a couple of years ago regarding Logie a big favourite of his - I wonder if they ever met during the winter. We never know.
I think Rothes and Mallachie came very close together at one point during first migration 22/10/2009 in Guinea Bissau - one track put them within 4 km of each other.

Yes there is actually a whole family that was tagged early on (2000) They were S06 who wintered in Spain and S18 who wintered in Africa.
Their chick T04 was tagged but unfortunately the signal disappeared while the bird was in France.
In 1999 S06 had a different partner and her chick R03 was tracked. He was a feisty chick and he went all the way to Africa.
I find it strange that this incredible experiment has almost been forgotten.
Tiger Signature
Hi Tiger from Bioko Island - I would love to see this experiment repeated and as we have discussed before I am sure it was Roys intention for Logie, Tallisman and Offspring Tagged - however all would have ended up in the Bijagos Archipelago off Guinea Bissau and not sure whos instinct they would have followed. Unfortunately loosing T04 tracking in France we do not know where it would have ended up. Likewise was R03 following S06 original genes or the partner - These questions from 2000 are still unanswered.
Hi Keith. Great to hear from you. Are you counting the days until you get home?
Yes it would be great to see it repeated. I feel that Logie and Talisman turned out to be the wrong choice as it seemed to me that they produced weak chicks. Maybe you need to track the chicks first and then the parents! Two strong candidates I can think of! :)
Two other points. S06's original mate was Norwegian I think. When S18 got back late in 2001 he was probably shocked to find her shacked up with a Norwegian toy boy S09 who remarkably was also tagged.
Tiger - I am assuming you are meaning Dyfi but I may be wrong.

Well either Dyfi or Loch Garten. I doubt if either would be allowed mind you.
I do not think that Rob Bierregaard has tracked any parents and offspring.
