I offered yesterday to start a new Topic once Bynack had fledged, but as we now have the updated Satellite Tracking page, and biography pages for Tore and Bynack, and there are some tracking results for Tore on Google Earth, I’ve gone ahead with it.
A brief introduction to the ospreys we’re tracking – first, the class of 2011.
Tore – link to her Biography
Tore is the elder of this year’s juveniles, her ring is blue/white 48. She fledged on Tuesday 12th July aged 54 days, and has started to do a little exploring.
Bynack – link to his Biography
Tore’s younger brother, ring blue/white 47. Bynack is aged 53 days today and has yet to fledge.
Edit: He has fledged, at 10.18 am today 16/7.
Rothes – link to her Biography
Rothes is the eldest of EJ and Odin’s offspring, hatched at Loch Garten in 2009. Her ring is white/black PJ. She migrated as a juvenile to Guinea-Bissau, and spent her formative months on the small island of Unhocomozinho, in the Bijagos Archipelago. Now a sub-adult, she has travelled north to Europe for the first time this summer and is currently in the Gironde estuary in SW France, where she also spent 6 weeks on her way south in 2009. So far, she has not returned to the UK.
Rothes' earlier travels were followed in this thread, now closed.
scylla I am well but very sad for my sister (posted about our visit in weekly chat). She is very ill now and it was heartbreaking to see her.
Margobird
Talked to my sister who lives in the Tamar Valley just now, and she told me there was picture of an osprey in this week's East Cornwall Times, taken last month near Lopwell Dam on the River Tavy. The link to the story is here, but the picture is not available on-line unless you subscribe. My sister says that the picture is taken from below, and does look as if there is a dark ring on the left leg, but you can't see whether there is an ariel. The dam is within a couple of miles of where Tore spent most of September, so its not unrealistic to think this picture could be another entry for the LG scrapbook
How disappointing, the subscription isn't cheap enough :-( But thank you for the news, AG, maybe the picture will surface some day.
IMAGICAT
So I paid my 55p for one issue but unfortunately the photograph is very, very difficult to see if there's anything on the legs. If you blow it up too far it just gets too blurred. If anything, it looks like there might be a white tag, but I'm really not sure. To be honest, the way the story is written, I'm not sure if this is the actual osprey that the chap spotted, or whether it's just a stock photo!!
Update from Richard:
"Tore is in Guinea Bissau, near Ingore, north of the capital Bissau, heading that bit closer to the Bijagos Islands where Rothes has her time-share. No further word on Rothes, by the way, but we'll keep checking.
Meanwhile Bynack has moved on from near Marrakech, journeyed on down through Morocco, crossed first into, then back out of Western Sahara, and is now in Mauritania just south of a place called Bir Moghrein. So good, steady progress from him and his route is looking to be on course.
Tore is approx 40 miles from Varela where Rothes spent a lot of time before finally moving to the Bijagos Islands.
Bynack is bang on course.
Approx Bynacks position
Comparison with 09 and AW. Amazing!
Loch Garten stats. and All the important links for LG.
That is excellent news ALAN. Thank you. It would be lovely to know that Rothes and Tore spend the winter in the same area. It will be fascinating to see whether Bynack follows on.

Wow Bynack put in a shift on the 6th didnt he :-)
Keep going lad you will soon be clear of that sandy stuff below you.
Isnt it interesting the LG youngsters did a short stint from the nest then rested up for 3-4 weeks before going on to tackle Africa where as the Dyfi 3 kept pushing on with not much of a stop over anywhere.
Maybe there will be a family reunion soon if Bynack goes the same way as his sister and meets up with Rothes. Makes you wonder if EJ and /or Odin might be waiting to see their youngsters arriving :-)
A very old Shropshire Lad.
Thanks for the updates ! So far this migrations is going well. I hope it continues that way. Tore and Bynack were so close it probably would give them comfort to see each other again. I would like to think that either EJ or Odin see their Juveniles successfully made their first migration even if they only see them briefly. I doubt that Rothes would recognize Tore and Bynack nor them him/her
