Daily Update (LG Nest) Friday, 8th July, 2011

A new day. It is day 50 for Tore today. Will she fledge today?

Personally I do not think so as it is still very early in the fledging window and young ospreys usually spend some time staring down before taking the plunge. No sign of Tore doing any staring yet.

I notice that there were 392 posts in yesterday's thread. That really is busy!

  • I don't think she will fledge for another few days, Tiger, because she hasn't been airbourne for long enough at a time yet.  She has only made tiny little lifts whilst doing slightly longer jumps.  She needs to be higher for longer.

  • Daisy Ray  Yes she needs to be disappearing out of the camera view.

Ah, but it was a terrifically exciting day!  I witnessed the p.m. drama of the two youngsters eating the same fish reasonably amicably.  Sadly I didn't see the a.m. drama of the whole family eating fish on the nest together.

    Yes Tiger, I quite agree.

  • Did you catch the Flag's Fledge captures I posted on yesterday's Daily update Tiger? Memories :)

  • I wonder what today will bring?  Yesterday was memorable . First the entire family eating on the nest . And then the chicks feeding themselves for the  first time.

I think they did a magnificent job for a first  attempt. Not fighting and  they  understood they need to hold the fish down with a foot.  They also got the head twisting / tearing action .

The adults are  very smart. The past two days the fish deliveries were cut down and  the chicks were hungry. Then Odin drops a fish  for them to  try to eat.  If they had been  stuffed they would not have  bothered  trying to eat it.  EJ was close by but she didn't interfere as they struggled with the fish for about a half hour.  When they  got too frustrated and gave up she immediately came to the nest  to  serve the  fish .

Humans could learn a lot about parenting  from these  birds

  • Well, after another bout of insomnia, I'm finally off to bed!

Thanks to all for the updates on the big event earlier (which I missed due to an extended nap!), and especially CC and Cirrus for the video clips - priceless! Have bookmarked them in my '2011 breeding season for Loch Garten' folder immediately :-)

Tore and Bynack snuggling together on the nest, aerials prominent. All looks calm.

    Goodnight.

  • Juvies are active again, and so am I!

hmm, this picture to 30 mins to upload!! Actually taken at 3.21 am.

Plenty of preening/scratching/wingercizing has been going on (the latter only from Bynack).

It is now nearly light, and Tore is preening. Bynack is far less active.
